Oh man, I still have memories of saturday mornings when my dad use to play The Letter on the record player. RIP Mr. Chilton

 

Absolutely gutted

 

Gonna be listening to Big Star, the Box Tops and various spinoffs all day. This news came as a real surprise. Alex left us with a ton of great music.

 

A cover of "september gurls" has been played on a daily basis for about 3 months in Super7. RIP old man

 

This makes me sad. At least now he can work with Chris Bell again.

 

Please god, not The Bangles version....

 

I'll bet there are still fans of This Mortal Coil who have no idea how much is owed to the Big Star family.

 

I had no idea they had even covered that song until about a week ago when a customer asked. I listen to The Carbonas on a pretty regular basis here in the store. The second LP "raw deluxe". A great cover, I think most people would agree.

 

I found my way to Mr. Chilton by way of This Mortal Coil. I am ashamed to say I had nothing on hand to play when I found out this news.

 

It is a loss - Big Star were a hige influence on some of my favorite bands, hence I found out about that way around. Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque is a virtual homage to Alex Chilton and co.

 

I read that Chilton was a big influence early on for REM...

I think it says something that such a diverse list of bands was inspired by him.
