Attack on Titan - Really? No One?
Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans.

Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source.

A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years.

Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

I got the nendoroid set. I like the manga, couldn't care less about the anime.

It's being merchandised to oblivion, which is something that I like about Japanese manga/anime.

watched the anime with my gf, we loved when
the main character was eaten by a titan
but thought the narrative really fell apart and drifted after that.

i will not be back for season 2, which is apparently super delayed.

I actually just finished watching the series last week. I loved it. Nice and violent. My little one watched it with me, although I am not sure that it was really appropriate for him. But he really dug it.

My son forced it on me, and I wasn't super down at first. Me: "So it is a low tech feudal society with unexplained high tech elements being menaced by giant vicious smiling naked people?" My son "yes".
Now I am riveted. Can't wait for season 2. Thought I had read it started in Japan on Dec 13, but I might have made that up. I do that.

I agree that it started great and kind of fizzled out at the end. I am never a big fan of any show that uses the mystery plot device so blatantly. It's like they know exactly what we want to know so they go out of their way to never tell us. It works well for awhile but if that becomes the only reason to keep watching it leads to an inevitable letdown.

I have to admit I never got to check out the manga or anime, but the new trailer for the upcoming live-action movie is pretty fucking badass imo:

Huh. Fair enough, like I said I'm not familiar with the source material - I just want titans wreaking bloody havoc. Can't be worse than Pacific Rim... :D

So I recently did a re-watch of season 1 as it was on Netflix, and I was jonesing for some anime enjoyment/a revisit of something good. Anyways, very much as I remembered. While there was a lot of I still find incredibly irritating, watching on the streaming platform certainly also smoothed out a lot and made for a much more enjoyable experience. BUT, the show is from 2013, and it still only has one season on there? I was waiting and waiting for them to eventually upload the second, but obviously there is some idiotic rights issue preventing it. So I tried being patient, but as I hadn't ever seen the second season as it wasn't out when I first watched it, this rewatch really kicked off that desire. Eventually I relented and looked for other ways to stream it (in the UK). Turns out it was available to an add-on anime package on Prime. Okay, not the best, but whatever. I debated, and ended up signing up for a free trial, just to watch this show.

And then it is dubbed only. Oh FFS!

So yeah, you can see where I am going with this. To be honest, I looked for three different shows in the last 5 days which I wanted to see and which were 'available' on Amazon Prime. And every. Single. One. was offered through an additional subscription app. What the &$£)# {~@*&!!

TL;DR I am still excited to see S02 (via other means now). And I am right effed off with all these shitty streaming services. I don't go to a separate store for every item on my grocery list. FU streaming in 2020.

Couldn’t care for the story nor the character (anime, never tried to watch the manga). Found it really violent and depressing which would be fine with great writing and story but it failed there (IMO and all that jazz).

@ultrakaiju If you have access to a VPN, I'd recommend Hulu for your anime fix.
They were my savior from Netflix never moving past S1 on shows like AoT & One-Punch Man. Sub & dubbed option for most shows & movies as well (sub FTW).

Shaking my head at the negative feedback AoT got in this thread. It pays off in dividends for those who stick around.
Gonna be tad a long(er) wait for the 4th/final season... was scheduled to air the end of this year but looking more like early/mid 2021 now all things considered.

I absolutely LOVED the show. Pacing was a bit annoying, with things being revealed only little by little, and of course I like almost every other character more than Eren... but aside from that, it’s great. It’s dark and violent, which is exactly the kind of stuff I like. The story is crazy for sure. Can’t wait for Season 4.

P.S. If anyone knows any anime that are similar in terms of a dark story and a good dash of violence, please PM me! I only started watching anime again a few months ago and I’m looking for some more to waste my quarantine time on.

I guess it is a bit too obvious a recommendation, but Evangelion is a sort of interesting one with a good deal of parallels to Titan. Nowhere near as dark, but I think the tradeoff in terms of quality story is worthwhile. A bit of a swap of fantasy setting for sci-fi though.

Some of the other combinations of dark + violent stuff that come to mind are the more feudal/samurai inspired anime. You might want o check out some of the Devilman series, or Fist of the North Star. Well, that and, I am totally discluding some of the more truly bizarre stuff (don't think we need to get into an Urotsukidoji discussion here).

There've been quite a few horror-themed shows put out recently (the last decade), but to be honest I have not seen most. If you don't mind some older content though, this list might be useful.
