just received this Goccodo Astro Unkotsu and it has some cloudiness/yellowing of the soft vinyl dome. any suggestions on how to clean it and make it clear again?
there are extensive conversations about clear vinyl on here if you search, but the answer is, nothing can be done. The vinyl will naturally do that over time, more or less, depending on display/storage conditions.
Yeah, you have to accept yellowing, but some cloudiness is caused by humidity and can be cleaned up by heating the vinyl. My toygraph Space troopers are especially bad for this. The helmets would be cloudy in the summer, clear in the winter.
So if the cloudiness/haze is caused by humidity, just heating alone will cause it to clear up? I.e., no wiping the vinyl?
Conversely, I had a bunch of stuff stored up in the (cold British attic) for a few years and found that the clears went cloudy as a result of our sub zero temps. Bringing them back to room temp. and warming them through with a hair dryer restored the clarity 100%.
I have noticed it varies, even with toys on the same shelf ( same environment). Some older toys are still crystal clear and some newer are yellowing. Not all clear vinyl has the same 'formula'.
it’s crazy how much storage can seemingly effect it. I have two of the same Clear figure from 2003ish. One has been opened and one is in the bag and the difference is pretty noticeable. But I didn’t realize how yellowed the opened one was until I got the bagged version in hand. That being said, some light yellowing on clear vinyl can give the toy some character if you ask me.
