I checked the website. If you got >Deep Sea Drilling then >Click on the red target on the map you see all the drilling sites. Chuai Station in the Mid-Atlantic Range. It says due to opening Sept 07. Closest one to NY.

Cool, that could explain the rumored creatures that detach.

Yeah, hilarious. You can even buy Slusho merchandise. "Slusho" was one of the fake working titles for "Cloverfield" during production. Slusho was a fictional Slurpee-like drink offered by Vaughn to Sidney in the second episode of director Abrams' TV series "Alias." If you were to drive to Santa Monica to visit Abrams' Bad Robot production company, you might see this:

Hahahaha ... I found lots of little in-jokes at that site (the little league team named "Lions" LOL) but not that one. I love the irrelevant thought balloons of the various creatures. Hm, one is a little whale.

A gold star goes to the first company that makes a vintage-style sofubi toy of the big whale monster.

Those little parasites remind me of the Garthim from The Dark Crystal.

So maybe it is a godzilla film, only with a literal take on it.
If that thing is the monster, I'm well impressed.

I showed this to my wife, she said "That's dumb, a big walking whale? I'm not afraid of that." I tried explaining my POV, (big weird thing stomping and crushing with crab dudes killing on the front lines) and still, it was no sale.

She said if it was a giant lobster/crab it'd be way cooler. If that's legit, I'm pretty pumped too, looks neat.

If that's the monster it is pretty cool. My only theory as to why it might not be that is because in the 2nd trailor for it before Beowulf, there is a shot of the smaller creatures attacking a person. They are silhouetted on this piece of plastic sheeting or something. Anyway they appeared to have more human characteristics. They looked more like mutated humans or something and less like crabs. But then again they showed it for all of about .75 of a second so I could be completly wrong. Just my thoughts.

If you're going for "realism," (as much as you can in a giant monster movie), having a walking whale-based monster is sort of silly. They're completely aquatic creatures, not amphibious ones that are strong enough to walk around on land like crabs, frogs, etc. Beached whales can't even roll their way back to safety.

Of course, if aliens sprinkle some magic fairy dust powder on it, it can pretty much do anything it wants. Science has proven that time and time again.

What if the whale happened to be swimming by while there was a nuclear test?

Exposure to nuclear radiation will turn most harmless creatures into giant city stompers. It's Newton's fourth law, right after the one about red wine and fish.

Those "smaller creature" silhouettes are human beings in hazmat suits. This was clarified by production photos from behind the plastic sheet.

If that is the creature as I'm inclined to think it may be, and if the origin story about undersea construction is true, then this is a classic "man's interference in nature unleashes monster" story. Why not incorporate a whale-like look, given that whales are creatures that perhaps more than any other connote the damage humans have done to the sea? After all, a certain huge whale is THE classic monster in American literature. If we need our monsters to be realistic, then a heck of a lot of kaiju are in trouble.

    :)

Whales do have vestigial pelvis and rear fins that may have formed what we now know as bipedal motion. It's a stretch but not stupid, and in my mind close enuff for giant monster movie.

Yep I was thinking about that, too. Seabull is part whale, part bull. The bovine element helps him get around on land.

(I actually had that conversation a couple of years ago with Kaminaga-san from Marusan, ironically the day after I had eaten whale. We think about this stuff too much.)
