Not trying to yuck anyone's yums... such a kickass-looking event, it's a shame on the timing... but there's no way this show will/should go off. Their stated stance so far is that they will only cancel if required to by state government, but the time's already here for anyone organizing a large gathering or event to cancel out of responsibility, not because they've been ordered to. Hopefully they let people know sooner than later.
I, personally, am probably going to sit this one out. It breaks my heart, but oh well... if it does go on, whoever DOES actually go will likely score everything their sofubi-lovin' hearts desire.
Thought I posted this already, they posted something yesterday about the event still being on. Click through for the text: Unfortunately Cory from Science Patrol has had to cancel his appearance at the show. Again, click though:
Yeah Rog, you posted it in one of the COVID-19 threads. Seeing it there is what spurred my post above.
We will see what happens. I'm all for postponing it at this time. Copied from the LA Times: "Gov. Gavin Newsom joined state health officials in recommending the cancellation of gatherings of 250 or more people across the entire state, escalating the effort by his administration to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus."
im still really looking forward to this as there is tons of great makers who will be there, and if not at least hopefully they can have someone sell stuff for them. I have no doubt the people running the show will be proactive in providing updates as we get closer to it.
The governor of CA declared that non essential gatherings of 250+ people should be cancelled. https://www.latimes.com/california/...ngs-canceled-governor-gavin-newsom-california
No one is disputing the fact that this event was something everyone who collects in our community was looking forward too. With D-Con now being too big many in the sofubi community felt lost in D-Con. I have spoken to other collectors and they missed the intimacy D-Con had when they were in Pasadena. This was an anticipated return to those awesome early days. Unfortunately for Creature Bazaar, they are the victim of the most rotten timing ever. 2020 so far has sucked for everyone. It's only March! Nate and I have tickets to both days but "in an abundance of caution" for my family's sake, I have a 5 year old, and I've always had respiratory issues. It's going to be a regretful pass at this point. In retrospect, right before the new year, we were like hey new decade new beginnings. Who knew things could go so wrong so fast and in a global scale to boot. Ugh.
Disneyland and California Adventure closed until end of March. https://abc7.com/health/disneyland-...se-in-response-to-coronavirus-threat/6007328/
My place of work (Universal Studios) followed Disney's example just a few hours later. It's a big bummer but at this point it doesn't seem like there's much that can be done. Whatever the show organizers decide to do, I'll support it. After all, it's just the first year. The fact that they were able to generate such a stellar lineup gives me nothing but high hopes about the future of this event.
CB say they are going to make some announcements later today. I already decided that as much as I want to go (and I never miss a local toy event, and regularly travel for others), I cant in good conscience attend due to my husband being at high risk. Family must come first. All our families and loved ones.
Yeah I had to cancel because frankly I cannot become a vector possibility as I see my elderly folks very regularly. Welp, I'm going to continue painting kaiju anyway.
just got off the phone from a City of LA public announcement about exercising common sense amongst the virus hysteria. the toy show is non-essential and unless they wanted to spend the money on hand sanitizer stations or handwash stations or masks etc. i dont see it getting better before the date of the show. but im hopeful!
Defiantly a bummer. Just the fact of looking forward to a little time off and seeing some sofubi gods and friends. Now comes the agony of sitting on the phones with the hotel and airlines to try and cancel and refund everything. I am bummed but I hope to get out to the rescheduled event. I am happy that it went the safe route as many don’t know how bad this can truly get. Taking everyone traveling into consideration this is the best solution and alas is what it is.
My last vacation was Death's Vault and I have been counting the days till Creature Bazaar, but shit is getting real serious everywhere. I'm hoping I can at least get some of money back on this, otherwise I'm out a good grand ahd change. AirBNB is being a I FART A LOT about this thing, but I believe airlines are at least offering free re-schedules or credits.
I’m very thankful for the fact that Quang and Brandon had to make an incredibly difficult decision, but it’s being made at the helm of putting attendees and artists at the forefront. I’m saddened, but I’m at least sittin’ still knowin’ it’ll be a postponement than a cancellation. I feel for the peeps that have invested in flights and places to stay, though. Hopefully there’s majority returns, if not full refunds.
I agree. As much as I think this is a big disappointment to the fans and artists alike, this was likely the right decision to take. I really feel sorry for the organisers and vendors who have already put so much effort in to setting this up; and really it comes down to just suffering incredibly unfortunate timing [and CB is not alone in this]. At the end of the day though, you have to perform risk assessments, and balance both the considerations for the public - and all those they may be in contact with who could be susceptible - and the chances that turnout could be so low that the efforts if they went ahead would be in vain. I really hope that everyone out there can get compensation for their travel arrangements.
My friend just lost about $800 from Airbnb refusing to reimburse him for his spot in NJ for Monster Mania Con this weekend! They cancelled it and rescheduled until August. I guess Airbnb is being a real dick about this "outbreak" they're about to lose a shit ton of money and grasping onto what they can. Sucks so much about Creature Bazaar
