too funny! i was asking myself why i don't like this thing, and when i spotted the question that animator asked, the first thing that popped into my mind was "bandaid."
overall, it just feels too goofy for my tastes. some of these color applications are quite nice, but these won't be making an appearance on any of my shelves, ever.
looks like the figure will do just fine without me, though, which is fine, as i certainly don't wish for failure for scott just because i don't care for his beets!

These turned out great! It's almost like the colors shouldn't work... yet they DO work so well!

Do you know that the use of "a gyp" is racist toward gypsies, and a violation of Skullbrain rules against such remarks? If not, consider this your schooling.

Now back to the love and hate.

It is an actual word, but is still a pejorative believed to be derived from racist attitudes towards the Roma people. There are many insults that are technical words (none of which I will repeat here for illustration), but that doesn't necessarily mean they are acceptable.

I know what gyp stands for.

persons of nomadic habit of life, whatever their race or origin, but does not include members of an organised group of travelling showmen, or persons engaged in travelling circuses, travelling together as such

So as far as it being racist, its not. Unless you have some other argument against it thats that.

    Against it, not me. Sorry.

I feel like I might be the one beeting a dead ______, but at least this is more constructive than the typical Beet discussion.

I think you are missing the point here, and I am only drawing this out to clarify for educational purposes, not to be calling anyone out. The difference here is between the term 'gyp' meant to denote a rip-off/bad deal/etc. in relation to an interaction with a "gypsy." In that way, forgetting for a moment the term gypsy, it has a strong negative connotation relating a specific ethnic group. That is why it is not acceptable.

But I will also point out that even in the article you posted, it cleary says that the term "gyspy" is not unanimously accepted especially among the Roma themselves, and as such, I would refrain from using it when trying to be formally polite. It is well understood to be an exonym (applied by other people) and is derived from an incorrect association. In the same way that using colloquial terms for homosexuality or racial groups is generally unacceptable when you are not a member of said group, it is hard for one on the outside to speak towards what is accurate or okay to use.

Fair enough. My ex had a Roman/Greek friend with a large family. They never saw it as derogatory or with any bad connotations, and they were from the old country. So from first hand experience, I never saw it as a problem.

Only you forget there are quite a few people on here that throw around insults based on homosexuality and homoerotic art in a negative light even on header cards. But that's all good because its a boy's club, brah. ;)

And none of this changes the fact that some people show up now just to use this place as a hype machine and market place.

Let us not forget that Alice was banned not long after going off on an anti-homosexuals-as-parents rant.

Alice's banning was brought on by several things from the powers that be.
As much as he and I may disagree on some things, he was a good guy and I miss him being around here.

Yes i know. He was also nice to me and took my defence on a few occasions. I always thought his ill-advised rant was just trolling in very bad taste, i have a hard time believing he actually believed in what he was saying. I think Coop finally got him banned.

I really like Stu a lot - his irreverence, off the wall attitude, shared likes and heritage. I also regretted that we never got to meet up in Japan in 2007. So shortly after that incident, and before his banning, I got a PM from a board member who was pretty offended by his comments. I checked them out and talked to him at length via multiple PM's because I too suspected his opinion that homosexuals should not be parents was, as you say, bad taste trolling. Despite much back and forth - and what I think were sound arguments on my part - and (IMHO) some very unsound reasoning on his part - I failed to convince him. In fact he told me he would and could never agree with the idea of gays as parents. We agreed to disagree.

While I agree with the right to free speech, I have to be honest and say I don't want to be subjected to homophobic opinions being expressed on this board. The same way I don't want to see right wing, racist and misogynist rhetoric on here either.

So, yeah, I miss Alice/Stu - but the old Alice/Stu who was a fun crazy guy - not the opinions expressed in my last few PM's with him.

And so as not to pollute this thread further - and because I'm unlikely to check this thread for follow-ups - if anyone wants to discuss further please PM me.

I respect people who have different opinions than I. I disagree with him on that issue, but being an adult I can deal with that. I find his belief much less offensive then some of the blatant locker room slurs and language that gets thrown around here. Just today I read a thread that I seriously had to re read twice. Sophomoric is being generous.
