I think those are all valid points. But let me ask you this- how does this toy differ from anything produced by Monstock? You could level all of those accusations at Monstock's toys- no back story, simple paint schemes, numerous super-limited releases, etc. (I don't agree on the lack of detail, though; if nothing else, this toy is pretty well sculpted.) But most people here seem to agree that Monstock stuff is pretty decent... desirable, even. I like Monstock. The only difference that I see at the end of the day is that Monstock stuff is designed by Japanese artists, whereas Deadbeet is designed by a U.S. (?) artist. I guess you could argue that Monstock stuff is superior on subjective criteria, but objectively, the circumstances of production and sale seem pretty similar to me. Moreover, I don't see any clear quality deficiencies in this toy. Why the difference in reaction? Don't get me wrong- there is a lot of crap coming out in JP vinyl form these days... this just doesn't strike me as one of the toys that deserves to be dragged through the mud.
Beating a dead horse here but like I said on page 1, I don't have a problem with the toy... only how Scott doesn't seem to contribute much to this forum other than canned hype for his next release. as for all the flaming back and forth, you know how it goes: opinions are like orgasms, and only mine matters =)
Hey! Don't forget about your partner's/significant other's/lover's/etc. orgasm! Their orgasm matters/is important as well. Now, don't be selfish.
that's just comedy gold. skullbrain continues to be simultaneously the greatest and worst place on the interweb to hang out. i think this is a cool looking, well sculpted and produced toy. who's to say this is more of a "platform" than a zag? or any of the chima group stuff? or a bemon or nag? it's all subjective... isn't it? that said, i don't think i'd ever buy one... i hate beets. then again, i mainly collect bwana's stuff, so most of you will poop on my opinion as lacking worth anyway. now i'll go back to my corner, and keep my orgasms to myself.
Appropriate criticism? You mean angry, whiny, purist commentary hiding behind an avatar and screen name reminiscent of devil worship? Well, all I can say is that the people who work with me (should I start a list for you, so you know who to target), know better than to take your opinion of me seriously. If I WERE to be removed from SB (as per your request), well that would be unfortunate... I have thus edited my comment to remove the un-PC verbage, and will keep in mind in the future that such derogatory terms are not to be used. My sincerest apologies to any who may have been offended by the use of the 'R' word. My wife works with mentally disabled children, so I should know better than to throw that word around. My mistake. Kind of hurt my feelings that you used the word 'sucks' about this toy. I motion for 666doll's removal as a result of his overexagerated badgery. Nah - just kidding. It can be funny at times. So, anyway - cool toy Scott! And, Chris - orgasms? Huh?
Kudos to you for not using that ever so clichéd "opinions are like assholes..." bullshit that likes to get thrown around here every time opinions don't coincide. At least this is funny and somewhat true for a lot of us here.
If this was some hobbyist or amateur just here to shuck their random wares on Skullbrain every 5 minutes, fine, chase them off with a stick. In the cases of both Skinner and Scott, established artists with multiple toys, a certain amount of respect, or at the very least courtesy, is in order. It's called manners. These are guys that are working to make toys, every day in some way. I get not liking it, I get critically discussing it. I don't get chasing it off and condemning it for not conforming to very personal and highly subjective standards. I don't understand what benefit could possibly come from chasing creators away, especially guys that are self-producing. I mean, what the fuck man, what joy could you possibly get by shitting all over someone's self-made work. You might not like the Beet, but who knows, the next thing that comes along could blow you away. I only need to look at this vs. to understand why it's better to be open than closed-off. @Connell: Is there an interior designer/decorator equivalent for displaying toys? You should look into it as a full time job! Your displays make so many seemingly unrelated toys look so damn good together.
I got no problem with the toy, I even had respect for Mr Tolleson . . . but the overwhelming whiff of bullshit from the 'I'm one of you guys' (but only to pimp my shit) rhetoric tipped the balance! The next product could indeed blow everyone away, but by the same token Killercucumber, Poltergeistpotato or Psychosalami could equally suck balls because everyone's already been suckered into having the emotional investment and compulsion to buy! Gotta love hype psychology! I <3 Toys!
You bring up a lot of good points. But it being a piece of crap? thats very much an opinion. Especially when theres certain vinyl that people love on here thats complete shit.
I don't like sculpt, in fact something about it really rubs me the wrong way such that only few toys can do... I hate the name, the droopy tongue and the bandaid especially, but can't put my finger on exactly what bugs me about it so much overall. That said, I don't think it doesn't belong here, even if the creator isn't an active member. It appears to be well made for what it is and taste is subjective, so to me it's no different than any other sofubi I don't care for that gets hyped on the board. At least it isn't wearing pants or sneakers.
i'd buy the shit out of that : ) You should take that beyond TAG. You could be pimping private collector's homes across the country : )
I just meant it's a vegetable with arms, legs, and a face. Not a lot else to it. I could say this for a lot of toys on here. Toys that do have a backstory, most of those are rip-offs or "homages" to other characters, or are characters from a series, movie, etc. Last week people ripped on this guy(viewtopic.php?f=6&t=44790&hilit=whale) and he has a huge back story/animation to support the toy he loves/created. It isn't Japanese vinyl so maybe it is a bad comparison for toys that belong here. I'm just against the idea of continually ripping apart toys that someone put a lot of work into. It's okay to not like something and say why, it's not cool to repeatedly say this over and over again. This goes for the supporters too, who are equally to blame for this thread going out of control. This, like everything said here is an opinion which should not be taken to heart if you disagree. You make a lot of good points, as do most people on this thread both in favor or against. I like the debate, and wish it happened in every thread. No one should take it personally, even the creator. 1 thing we all agree on is the idea that if you want to be a member of this board, you should be a contributor. It's easy really, say hello, have opinions on the toys here. We're all here because we are passionate about certain toys that belong here. We might not be passionate about all of them, but we identify with why people are into the same, or similar, stuff we are into. Lastly, I think the best way of deciding if a toy is successful or not is to state your point and watch the thread succeed or fail with every release of a toy. Let it drop/sink/disappear if you don't like it. Also just my opinion.
