    that makes me sad.

I hope he has a revelation and becomes a born again Christian. Imagine him in a pentecostal church speaking in tongues when he is 60 years old.

Looking at him again...I don't get the blank skin-space left around the eyes.
Why not just totally black 'em out, right up to the lid-rims?
I know it would hurt like hell, but it would look a lot....um, better.....

    Kids today.

I remember when tattoo artists wouldn't do faces or hands. What the fuck happened?

If you look thru the posts below the pics, a tattoo artist points out that when people want sex changes, there's a battery of rigorous psychological assessments & prep to go thru, to make sure the patient is well set up to handle the radical change in themselves and in interactions with the world at large. He says he wishes there were similar procedures in place for people who want to get this sort of inking....makes sense to me, especially for younger people who they they'd like to do something like this...if somebody wants to do this in their fifties, that's completely different from some 18-24 year-old wanting it....

That's all true, but at what point does the artist say "I won't be a part of this". Obviously this guy is not well mentally, why would the artist play along? They won't work on customers who are drunk or high, why take money from a crazy guy to fuck up his face for life? If you're in prison for life and you want to do something like this to yourself, that's one thing, but this kid's life is over now because the artist went along with him and his genius idea. Tattoos and piercing used to be underground and genuinely shocking to the general public, but now that it has been such a fad, it seems that only these extreme acts are able to shock people anymore. Self mutilation is a sign of deep self loathing, that's not something anyone should be profiting from IMO.

    talkin' 'bout my g-g-g-generation

hope I die before I get old...

You gotta figure that dude expects to live fast and die young...old saggy faces would not look so great inked up like that...

Still, I've got to hand it to him for commitment and balls...that full face tatt is a big, big step (or so I imagine!)

I would think that any professional artist that would do that work would probably have a legal waiver that needed signed prior to any inking...

I sharpied up a buddy's face once (he was party garbage and it seemed super funny at the time)---he was less appreciative of my artistic endeavors when he came to the next day...

Agreed. I know two tattoo artists, and they've honestly told me they will not do face or hand tattoos (or names for that matter) on (most) folks because most people don't think about how it will affect them. If you already have similar ink done, I'm sure an exception would be made.
Your point about younger folks was specifically the reason I never got anything when I was younger. I couldn't decide on something I would be happy looking at every day for the rest of my life.
I told myself when I was 35, if there was something I wanted, I would get it then..

Almost there...still nothing that catches my eye :)

you can get this done for free where I work. I've never tattooed before though. so it may look odd.

btw ethics are a part of tattooing just as they are with most cosmetic procedures(or any job for that matter). there are some who will apply therr personal ethics and some who won't. I know bad tattoo artists who as much as they need the money will not tattoo hands, necks etc on people who aren't covered. there are also some very good, well known tattoo artists who don't give a fuck and will tattoo a 18 yr olds hand for the right price.

I saw this on boingboing or some other site like that yesterday and didn't want to believe it was true. I looked at it for a long to time trying to determine if it was just a clever photoshop job but in the end was undecided if it was real or not. If it is real, I really wonder about the mental state of both him and the guy who did it, just like everyone above.

it's wack how people are trying so hard to be individuals these days, but most forms of expressing this are all based around superficiality and their appearance. What ever happened to reading some books and becoming an individual through that. Honing your intellect can be a great thing and it will set anyone further apart from others than any tattoo could.

I don't have any problems with tattoos or piercings or anything. Every time i see some dude with some tattoo flash on his arm, or a nose piercing or some girl with cherries on her collarbones, I don't say... "wow there goes a real individual." It just ends up being generic. Sure,a skull tattoo'ed on your face is a real statement but i'm sure more people are gonna judge what it looks like than actually ask what the statement is.

Turtletooth said self-mutilation is a sign of self-loathing. I think that's true, but for so many people getting inked don't think they go that deep intellectually. It's about looking at yourself in a mirror and admiring how tough you look with the sleeves and the neck tattoo. It's all just window dressing for an empty house. If i had a choice between spending a couple hours in a car with a dude with a bunch of tattoo's or a guy who reads books, i'd take bookworm.

Of course, this is a broad generalization. I know a lot of people with a ton of tattoos and they're good people, but i also know a lot of people with a ton of tattoos who are boring as hell.

I hear you, turtle, but then again, I don’t always think face tattoos look bad or betray deep self-loathing.

There’s a guy I regularly spy around town- he’s probably in his early 70’s- who has one side of his face decorated with black crescent moons and stars. The guy seems very happy, radiates contentment and wisdom. But, obviously…this is not that. I look at this and “REGRETTABLE!” flags pop up all over the mental screen. Granted, it’s just one picture online, but I see a troubled soul when I look into the eyes of skullface here, and something tells me he didn’t have a solid grasp on the long-term impact (tho, as scottygee said, maybe his plan is to not get old).

As for the artists who would do this kinda thing- well, some are surely idiots/greedy exploiters, but others are probably committed to that hardcore body-mod culture, which I can’t pretend to have much deep understanding of (tho some of the people who do that stuff seem to me to be relatively sane and happy in it). I have a few tattoos, including one which covers half my belly- but giving or receiving brandings*, scarification*, surgically moving your nose to your forehead**, etc….shit like that is completely lost on me.

So, on one hand, on a personal level, I feel bad for this young guy and whatever led him to this; on the other hand, tho (there’s part of me that always reflexively snaps to a “macro” view of things like this (the cosmically soothing upside of years of ingesting psychedelics)), people like this are a stark reflection of the howlin’ pain and anguish, and maybe they’re necessary in that way….can’t have happy without sad, the instanding without the outstanding, etc, etc…..

*I can understand it, at least in a social anthropology sense, when it’s a socially-supported, centuries-old rite (even tho I may find it fuckin’ dumb and repellent- like, say, traditional clitoral circumcision); the whole neo-tribal sentiment of some body-modders has always seemed flimsy and ingenuous to me…reminds me of a girl I once dated who changed ethnic identities and accents on a weekly basis…..

**There’s an Italian artist whose “work” has been to have multiple plastic surgeries, transforming herself to look like various figures from classic paintings…last I heard, the nose-to-forehead thing was next on her agenda- her “masterwork” ode to Dada…more power to you, lady…….

I think "Deathmask" will probably be a minor celebrity where ever he's from and in all likelihood will have a bigger posse/dating pool for doing whatever goth/orc/skeletor type shit it is he does. Who wants to hang with the dude that suspends himself or has floppy plug holes when you can be in the cryptkeepers posse? I would be shocked if this guy actually lives a non-scene, normal capitalist type existence, thinking about 401k's, home equity, and paying bills and shit like that.

isn't it a little too general to have tattoos and books be the opposite of each other? some people like books and having colorful pictures on their skin at the same time....
