Well, the new season of Doctor Who started tonight, and I loved the first episode. When it was announced that Matt Smith was going to take over as the Doctor I was a bit skeptical, but he pulled it off brilliantly. And although my wife was upset that she doesn't have David Tennant around anymore to ogle, she really liked the episode as well. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the season, especially with Steven Moffat taking over as the show-runner (he has been the most consistent "great show" writer of the new incarnation of the show). Oh, and Karen Gillan. Enough said. Did anyone else get a chance to check it out yet?
Most people were really unsure about Matt Smith but the kid hit it out of the park. A pretty generic villain but as far as introductory episodes go they both Smith and Gillan had great chemistry and he's going to make a legendary Doctor if the writing stays strong (which I expect completely from Moffat) and he brings what he brought in episode one week in and out. Boy does the opening music/credits blow though.
Unsure which is going to take longer to get used to . . . new Doctor or new opening sequence graphics and hopped up soundtrack. First episode was a promising start . . .
I generally download the new show in Season-sized chunks (or at least in 4.5GB chunks so I can burn 'em on a dvd and watch on my tv!), so I probably won't get a chance to check out the new season for a bit... But from what I've heard from the local Who fans, the new guy's good. Deadbone, I'm witchu, man...no one will ever top the Tom Baker years...but I can't front: the new show is good. Tennant was ill, the stories they wrote for him were slamming, and overall, the shit is light-weight, kid-safe entertainment.
