Not a Yankee fan, but Hideki was a powerhouse in the series (especially last night) and deserved MVP. It will be interesting to see whether he's back in pinstripes next season.
It's funny, today my Japanese teacher said the sports news in Japan, which follows Hideki's every movement, referred to his need to "maku chansu" in the series. We were laughing about how bizarre the language has become. Not a Yankee fan myself, but I've seen tons of games this year since ESPN Taiwan went apeshit with NYY coverage (probably because of Chien Ming Wang, though that didn't quite work out this year). They literally showed every Yankees game, often replaying games 3 or 4 times in one day! Anyway, Hideki is one of my fav. Yanks, so I'm glad he maku chansu shimashita in Game 6!
There is a bunch of odd American baseball phrases that have somehow been woven into yakyu terminology. As for "maku chansu", I would say it means "making the best of your opportunity".
Yeah something like that I reckon. Hard to imagine they would have been talking about producing, since he hit over .600 for the Series. So more like capitalizing, eh? Darned anecdote infected the rest of the class. We started using "maku chansu" every chansu we got.
