I believe that's just a copyright date, not a production date. You'll see that on lots of toys.

 

I figured it could be, but then I didn't see a repro copyright--which is also sometime present--a la 1966, 2007.

 

The date 2000 is stamped just on the other side that you can kinda' see there.
