This gem from a few years ago is streaming on Netflix now. If you haven't seen it you really should give it a shot. Great acting and a solid story with badass practical effects. One of those slow burn stuck in the middle of nowhere with a monster type of films. I saw it when it came out and I will happily watch it again on Netflix this weekend.

Anyone who wants to see some nice Canadian [Ontario] scenery, can check out What Keeps You Alive, recently added on Netflix. Folks looking for an entertaining/scary horror film, with good acting and logical plot/story progression, wellll..... maybe not as much.
Just saw the Susperia remake. I had lowlowlow expectations but, I was BLOWN AWAY! So much more there than in the original; which while visual amazing was, quite daft.
First review that has made me want to see this now. Thanks for giving me the motivation Neil! I'll report back at some point.
See my earlier review a page back, but yes, I thought Suspiria was fantastic. Having had even more time to digest on it, I remain incredibly impressed with what it accomplished. I am disappointed (particularly so for the filmmakers) that Mr. Argento does not see its value [mind you, I take issue with his criticism in itself, as it suggests he might not have even watched the full movie*]. It is EVERYTHING that a remake should be; and in a cinematic world which is now overrun with shoddy, unoriginal, uninspired ideas, prequels, sequels, rehashes, etc., etc., this is just what is needed. They took a core concept of the original film, used it for inspiration, but ultimately brought out an entirely different and unique product. It stands on its own merits, takes nothing away from the original, and also delivers so much in its own message. I think they should be applauded for that alone, the ambition and execution of something fairly daring, never mind that it is also an incredibly entertaining horror film. I also think the remake elevates a lot of concepts which the original barely scratched upon (dancing, for one, despite it being set in a dancing school, and takes this to a whole other level of horror). Guadagnino's Suspiria is original and a labour of love. It deserves every bit to be held up there with the greats of the genre. I respect DA, but is not without owning some criticism of his own (Phantom). And yes I can appreciate that some people might not enjoy the remake for its 'artiness' (for lack of a better term) but the original could hardly be described as naturalistic by any standard, and if released today, would also be dissected for being arty, pretentious, and overly self-indulgent. Frankly, I can just be happy with both.
Us: thoughts, hopes, will you see it? Midsommar: same set of questions. My thoughts on Us: I’m really excited for this. From what’s been piping up from SXSW is that it is fantastic and horrifying as fuck. I hope Jordan Peele flexes his fimmaking techniques a lot more with this one. And you bet your ass I’ll be seeing it. My thoughts on Midsommar: again, extremely excited for this. I love the vibrance of the color in what we’ve seen from the trailer. It looks completely batshit and all the bad stuff shown that’s supposed to make you feel miserable is doing the exact opposite for me. I hope Ari Aster can keep the twists as hidden as he did with Hereditary and can ultimately top that colossal of a film. Expect my ass securely locked in that seat on opening night.
YES! Really excited for both of these. Trailers gave away way too much for both movies which is a desease that needs to be stopped (but in times of anitvaxxers, we seem to be unable to stop deseases at all). Especially the Midsommar trailer - I stopped halfway through but it was already too late. I know they need to advertise these to a broad audience but still . . . who said trailers should be summaries of the actual movie?! Us hits theaters in Germany this Thursday and we will see it this weekend. Midsommar is also a must for the theatrical release. Especially since I feel like this is a one time only movie for me as was Hereditary. I loved the movie and loved the cinematogr cineto . . . how it was shot so much but I just cannot bring myself to sit through the unease again. Also, overanalyzing it usually destroys the magic for me.
Saw US and . . . well . . . it is hard to rate this one. First of all, and for me that's most important: I think it is one of the most entertaining, tense, twisted and well shot horror movies of the last years. I was laughing, I was chewing my nails, I was shouting (inner monologue of course) OH NO!!! more than once. But it also does not make any sense at all once you think about it. Actually, I even think the movie might totally fall apart once you think about it too long (and that would be like 5 seconds tbh). -- minor spoilers below -- The first part is a great slasher movie with some intense scenes. It is shot very well and has some great ideas, is very very tense and the acting is really good, elevating it even more from other movies of that genre. Once the movie establishes its larger plot it falls apart. But not in a way that I could not enjoy it. The plot just does not make sense and the established rules are constantly broken. However, they use that larger plot for some really weird but great visuals and some very simbolic scenes. It is almost as if they liked the idea so much they did not care at all whether it actually works. And that's what you should do. Don't analyze the rollercoaster, just enjoy the ride.
Not necessarily "horror", but the whole grouping of luchador films are equally ridiculous and I love monster movies, so I deem this fit to be here.
Microwave Massacre - with a name like that I didn’t expect a masterpiece and yeah, this was awful. At least the continual humour and tits helped me make it through until the end.
Wow Leigh Whannell is doing The Invisible Man, fuck Elizabeth Moss is one of the leads. I have to vent since Whannell has done amazing stuff, Upgrade was fun and dark, but goddamn I wish they would stop casting her fucking face in anything. Nothing against ugly people, I’m a part of that crew, but I am sick of seeing her face in anything. Wife and I stopped watching Handmaids because every couple minutes were just lingering shots on her face. I get it, it’s part of the setting, but in anything else I’ve seen her in I still want to punch her. Think it comes down to the way I view media, I don’t want to watch people or shit I can go outside to view, why I hate reality television. I just wanted to rant somewhere, thank you discussion board.
^ Odd rant. And I'm a little confused by it... is Elizabeth Moss like your busybody neighbor? Does she hang around on your block a lot? How does your disdain for her relate to what you see away from your screens or the Real Housewives? You find her physical appearance disquieting? You loath her approach to acting or how directors and cinematographers choose to frame her? Me no not understaersann. Gave up on Handmaids at the end of season 2, but it wasn't Moss' fault - writing and plot liberties did me in. I haven't seen her in a film for a while, but I quite liked a run she did a few years ago that included Listen Up Phillip, The One I Love and Queen of Earth. She was great in Jane Campion's Show, Top of the Lake, too. Upgrade, tho... fucking loved it. Haven't seen a minute of Whannell's involvement with the Waniverse. My loss?
Her face annoys the shit out of me, simple as that. She was irritating as fuck in Us for however long she was in it. I just can’t stand her face. Wasn’t meant to really make sense, just how some people in government positions don’t make sense. Just going to suck missing a solid sounding re hash film from a solid director all because I can’t stand looking at her. Very simple stuff.
Oh, yeah - forgot about Us. She was great in it, haha! Especially in the scene where her show of grief morphed into that insane mask of joyful evil. A perfect moment. Really looking forward to having a look at Her Smell, too. Too funny how you've helped me realize that I'm an active fan of her work! Thanks, E!
I read about Her Smell and it sounds really awesome. But I can’t watch it because of her. And honestly fuck you guys for posting pics of her. Didn’t even know that was her in the first pic. Guess I’ll piss off since this is just feeling like reddit now.
