i'm in the SE part. i'm open to a lot of things right now. looking forward to trying just about everything! went to a vegan place called the Sweet Hereafter. the lady took me there. the drinks are great and the food was tasty!
Great, SE is my favorite part of the city. For "hang out" bars, I would recommend Slow Bar (get their burger) and Star Bar, which are sorta "rocker". Lovecraft is cool, rocker/goth. Hal's Tavern and The Speakeasy are fun gross dives. Gold Dust Meridian and The Sapphire Hotel are slightly more... upscale maybe, good for a date, good food, no nonsense nice atmosphere. For food, Pad Thai Kitchen is my favorite "to-go" thai, Pok Pok is spicy but amazing "real" thai, Bamboo Sushi is excellent (and sustainable) sushi, La Calaca Comelona is great "real" Mexican, Pambiche is yummy cuban with even better desserts (get their guava carrot cupcake), Wild Abandon is solid mixed fare, Fujin for Chinese (get their crispy eggplant), Dot's for vegan bar food and the atmosphere (fuzzy wallpaper), and while not in SE, I have to mention Tanuki in NE for an unbelievable omakase of Japanese/Korean bar food ($15-$30 name your price) and excellent selection of sake.
that is awesome, man. Thanks for the recommendations. It will be great making myself home here. clouds are rolling in right on time. I'll definitely want to check out Tanuki and Sapphire Hotel soon. Slow Bar will happen too for sure! thanks again. Really looking forward to visiting Grass Hut too! sooooon!!!
Hit the superpod ASAP: 304 SE 2nd Ave Big-Ass Sandwiches is the destination, but everything there is good https://twitter.com/bigasssandwich
Gerrard, now you are living near Grass Hut, so get ready to have lots of fun visiting Bwana Spoons art market!
I live in SE as well. Right around 28th and Holgate. I suggest checking out C Bar. Awesome food, and they have a room full of pinball machines. Its right next door to Yoko's which is a great sushi place, but my favorite sushi is Sushi Mazi. There are 2 rolls named after me their, and 1 after my fiancee. Dots is also a SE place thats cool for late night hanging out.
Dots is probably my favorite restaurant/bar in the world. I've been going there for...20 years [sigh]? And in all that time all I've ever had are the cheddar fries - a feast fit for a king, or coronary! I was quite worried when ownership changed last year, but am happy to report that the cheddar fries (now called cheese fries) are just as good, and perhaps better than ever. That place sure has changed a ton over the past couple decades. Portland has terrific food. But I will say that it's much like this board - there's a lot of hype and not all of it is warranted. And no place is worth waiting 30+ minutes to get a seat.
^^^ Yes, it always cracks me up when I see long lines for weekend brunch at places like Cup & Saucer. They aren't bad, just not worth a wait. I didn't realize Dots changed ownership, I'm glad that they didn't change noticeably as of my last visit. You are right, they do fries right. I am not vegan, but like vegan food so usually go for the "Vegan Bowl", very filling and wholesome. Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention Zell's Cafe for breakfast, killer salmon benedict.
Welcome! Like Anna said, come by Grass Hut sometime. I'm around sat-monday at different times. If you like comics, it's part of Floating World, which is one of the best shops in North America (no foolin). There's an art opening every first thursday, so you're right in time for a big downtown art walk. check out Biwa for tasty izakaya food, Lardo for great sandwiches, and pretty much most bars have amazing beer and liquor selections!
totally agree. I'd gone to a handful of the hyped places when I first moved here, and none of them are that great. The cheese fries at dots are the best. Love the spicy tofu sauce. It used to be the only thing I had there, but If you like nachos try the barbeque chicken nachos. It's my new favorite.
wow, so many things to see about here. thanks for all the suggestions. anyone been to killer burgers? any favorites there?
It gets slammed because it's become so ubiquitous, but I still like the http://www.mcmenamins.com/ haunts for a movie and a beer. Food is overpriced, and not really worth the trouble.
Hands down my favorite place is roscoes on stark. I'm there at least once a week. 16 rotating taps, mostly craft beers, and they blow fast so there's always new beer to drink. Plus monthly beer summits. AND sushi next door is connected so you can order it at roscs incase your tired of pub food.
damn that sounds freaking great. I just looked like a tourist on Couch trying to find GrassHut...and did! It was like heaven...the comics spot was sweet too. Picked up a rainbow randall...totally didn't expect to see one available! *yoink!* Bwana wasn't in, so next time I hope to see him and say hello. also, the fredrick the beetle was way cool in person. i didn't expect him to be as big a figure. almost went for it, but had to hold my horses. Randall is totally good for me.
