    Lawrence G. "Larry" Cohen

    July 15, 1941 - March 23, 2019

Sadly Larry Cohen passed away yesterday. Though perhaps associated more with 'B' movies, I don't think this does the man justice. His work, as screenwriter, producer, and director, really was the epitome of an 'independent filmmaker' - a term which too often can get bandied about easily for arty flicks or those just courting big studio attention. He did what he loved, and on his terms. And I think this is why his films were so appreciated by his fans. I think he was comfortable with the appreciation and respect his films earned him, and only ever sought out to entertain after all; it wasn't about chasing media or industry accolades. In any case, I have pleasant memories over enjoying his films, for which I am thankful, and I am probably not alone among some of the 'less pure'/elevated cinephiles here.
