I hear what you are saying, I can't claim innocence in that area myself.

I've been on bulletin boards since, I dunno, 1992? And there has always been some sort of drama or conflict. It's just human nature. You just try to keep it to a minimum or establish rules and punish or restrict those who don't follow them.

The mods, for the most part, don't seem to be taking disagreements or flames offline or extinguishing the problems early on. Some do jump in and try to steer things in the right direction, but often times, it's usually late and a thread lockdown is necessary. With no active moderation, some board members do whatever they want while others try and step in and moderate with mixed results.

When the board was smaller active moderation really wasn't needed. There was more unity (for the most part). Better moderation would go a long ways towards solving some of the conflict problems. That and an ignore feature. If more moderation isn't possible, maybe we can all try and get into the habit of PMing a mod, with a quote and URL, when things start to spiral out of control.

The other problem of the expanded commercialization of things that some of us feel passionately about probably can't be solved. It's just a fact of life. There's a market for it so it will continue. The vintage guys are somehow (god knows how) able to tolerate this place and remain civil. And they must laugh at all of the contemporary stuff.

Change is inevitable. Whether it's changed for the better or the worse depends upon how you look at it and what you expect or want out of it.

Oh, I also have no idea if I'm a grumpy supporter, a vigilante, a snake or a shit-stirrer.

I just never liked when the mods them selves stirr the fire and made things worse.. thats my only real gripe. I know what usually is a topic that will get flamed and just try my best to stay away now. I rather not even bother.

And to me when the board was smaller even the people who don't get along now of days did back then. I can name a few people who I could joke with, who now I cant.

I remember when cesar was the only muscle we need to keep us in line. It was more like big brother giving you a little tough love as it was forgotten afterwards. Now grudges go on forever.

I'm not sure if I'm "OG" but I have been here since there was only a 200 member list with an active posting mem list of about 100. Things where different but as life all things change. I think the forums today aren't bad at all. Actually at times its really good.

I really like when Brian see this and posts his feelings. Keep up the good works guys. Personally I think the S7 staff and all of its workings have gotten way better and just keep getting better.

    Cary on :)

Brian stated all of the spoken and unspoken rules back on September 7th.

    1. Don’t be a jerk. If you are a jerk, at least be a charming jerk.

    2. Flame wars suck, you will both get tossed.

    3. No porn or [expletive deleted]’s. Please keep that dirty little secret to yourself.

    4. If you post anything, you are inviting commentary. Therefore, accept the
responses positive or negative without being a baby.

    5. Stay on topic. Don’t post wanted threads in RxH, your latest custom in
    Secret Base, etc.

    6. Rolling eyes mean sarcasm, I think…

    and

    1. We don’t expect new kids to know everything, but we expect you to at least
put in the effort. The search function is your friend. Use it before you ask a
question that has already been answered.

    2. There are reasons we don’t talk about certain subjects, and there are other
places to yap about that stuff. Head there for that kind of talk, don’t try
    and bring it here.

    3. Learn what sarcasm is on the board and develop a thick skin, or you won’t
    like it here.

    4. Selling and re-selling – this is important. You need to read the flipping thread.

    5. Off-site links – remember where you are before you go posting links.
Don’t poop where you eat unless you plan on eating poop.

    6. Yes, everyone here is a jerk, we already know that though.

    7. If you wouldn’t say it in real life, don’t say it here.

    8. Don’t offer a brand new toy that was just released in trade for a really old
rare toy or prepare to feel the wrath. You would think this is obvious but
    you would be surprised.

just read this thread after a long weekend...all great points from Brian...so glad he wrote them...

also, as far as OG goes...i've been collecting since my first baby rattle...that's OG, you noobs. I also used to collect little balls of paper as a toddler...money was hard to come by as a mumbling crawl-monster...

I always get bummed when people freak out on these boards...used to get real bummed years ago on the other board...left three years ago and haven't been happier...and lurked here a long time before joining...this is a great place, and there's no reason for any problems unless someone's trying to cause trouble....which can be dealt with easily...other than that, this place should be a haven, no?

I really dont consider myself OG for collecting and i started back in the early 80s with GI joes, comics etc etc and what not but do wanna say the nonstop fighting and battling drvove me away from actively posting here...I have read it(skulbrain duh) consistently regardless of any drama and always make an effort to send a private message to anyone i feel i can help with what little knowledge i have..If the drama and bullshit die down a little id love to come back(after almost a years hiatus)and be an active member again..I think im #11 on the member list and remember a time when it was fun and lighthearted here-
would really like to see it return to its original feel/status and be a nice place for everyone involved, to post and enjoy this great hobby..

Things change over time and that certainly has been my experience here as well. That said, I think SB is still an awesome resource and for the most part a lot of fun to visit and contribute to. I like the fact that people here are protective of this community though, even if this has often times resulted in peoples feelings getting hurt. There is a limit to the amount of shit that should be dealt out, but I also think it has kept this place from spiralling out of control.

I've met a lot of great people since becoming a member here. Most of which I remain in close contact with to this day and who make this hobby as much fun for me as the toys themselves. Every once in a while I find myself becoming way too caught up in this game though and find the best remedy is to simply take a step back and remember that it's supposed to be fun.

Thanks for your comments Brian. I think the fact that you're on here posting your thoughts and asking for feedback says a lot about not only your interest in SB, but your love for this hobby in general.

I'd just like to say that i really appreciate that this board gives us all a place to convene and chat about toys - that's really the reason why any of us bother to post - to share our enjoyment of the hobby. As for the scrapping that takes place - it's understandable when it's over things we're passionate about, or money, or whatever. But let's be honest, when was the last time you gained anything from having a massive argument on an internet bulletin board? If it's serious enough, S7 will get on board and do the sorting out. I reckon just flag spewing the molten hot rage and read a different thread if someone's getting to you....

whern I have some time of this holiday weekend, I will be working through some of the flagrant (IMO) threads and discussing with all parties involved what is and is not allowed. I will also be getting a couple more mods on board, and hopefully get this streamlined a bit. I think we all have very similar critiques, and it is time to focus on the good side of the BBS, not the bad and apply rules uniformly to all.

It is a hobby, and hobbies should be fun

this is my 1000 post so I wanted to make it count, i have been here 14 months and was welcomed with open arms by EVERYONE I knew nothing (some would say i still do !) but was fascinated by a pic of drew's collection on the other board, since then I have learnt a lot and spent even more, got to hang out with carl and jeb amoung others and most of my time on here is happy !!!
people seemed to have really lost the point of this place over the last six months and personal (and proffesional) vendettas seem to be all the rage , time has come to really reprimand these fellows and if everyone can't play nice and get along then F should look at temporary bans on certain folks to let them cool down, the funny thing with this place is we are all here for a love of toys BUT most of us share the same taste in fims / books / movies / weird shit which is why generally the whatever section is a nice place to live, as opposed to the selling yard.
I myself have been involved is a few arguments , sometimes it can be hard so keep composure when you feel like you are being personally attacked.
One thing I thought when reading Brian's post is 'if i was new here right now.....i dont think i would join' which is really sad, as it means others are surely thinking that too?
which ultimatley is bad for the board / hobby / super 7.

I don't want to get all 'we are the world ' on you all, but a little more tolerance wouldn't go amiss.

    thanks
    Spence

    ha seems it's my 1001 !!!
my 1000 must have been last night when i came in drunk and started that 'i hate you all thread ;)

i'm down with everything you said, brian. I started off pretty rocky here and was really turned off by some of the attitude flung my way so, i got kind of vengeful and did my SDCC thing, that in retrospect, now that i like this place, are rather embarrasing for me.
i've been working hard to make up for that but i understand that some people's first impressions are going to be the ones that stick, nothing to be done about that, but hope that time and my actions now will make up for it and possibly sway a few harder souls.
i'm really excited about the new database like all hell. you need ANY help on that, and i'll be there! i love a good resource and to me, besides community and sharing and laughter and debate, this place should be above all else, an invaluable resource. :)
