So I was out getting the wife some cold medicine at Safeway and happened upon (what I thought at the time was) an awesome find: Madballs! At the freakin grocery store!! http://www.madballs.com Officially licensed and everything. Upon arriving back home and following the web address on the tag, looks like you can buy them from the site, etc. So not as cool of a find** as I thought. But sort of like when you were a kid and realized that the library had video games. Or something. **Edit: It is/they are very cool...just not very rare or fancy. Anyway, California folks: Safeway has Madballs in the Halloween novelty section for 5 bucks apiece (when using your club card, natch). Upon inspection, I think they are Series 1. So yeah. Pretty cool. Does anybody know: were they made of Nerf originally? I thought that maybe they were molded vinyl...like squeak or bath toys, but then again, that was 20 years ago. And 20 ears ago. P.S. I think the baseball dude is lame. So I left him there. So there.
Those are F'in rad man. I remember being in 3rd grade when these came out and I dug them then the same as I do now. Thanks for sharing this piece of nostalgia Jhate.
Screamin' Meemie was cool! Poor guy! hahaha I haven't seen these uncarded tagged versions, pretty neat. The originals were definately foam, not nerfy though, the vintages don't always hold up, most of mine literally crumbled into dust, even carded ones I got through the bay. Something else. The re-issues are on series 2 now, you can also pick them up at Spencers gifts or Toys R Us if you are lucky. I have posted about both series on here before. You can see them all in my one year later collection thread. Stoked on these, hoping for super madballs in the near future and a maybe a re-issue my pet monster (that talking squeeze my hand cutesy version sucked) Target carries awesome madballs cards and stickers too.
My Pet Monster! With the breakaway S+M Handcuffs! Awesome. I also noticed that they make madball squeezers or whatever now...the kind where the juicy brainzzz and stuff pop out of eyeholes and stuff. I'll definitely check out your post Collin...not at all trying to trumpet this as new info or whatever...just got a kick out of their proximity to the soup. And feminine care products. Target is straight kryptonite...I could get lost in their toy section. I can't get out of there without buying a few Hot Wheels or Johnny Lightnings or Tech Decks. In fact, I think I've got a Zag laying it down on Grave Digger at the office as we speak. Also...while we're talking about Target: Has anybody else noticed the GIANT plush Domokun's they've got hanging from the ceiling in THEIR halloween section? I mean Jesus. Halloween. Toys. Ridiculous.
Oddly enough, even though Target has all that other madball stuff, I have never found one (out of the ten local ones) that actual carry madballs, nor do they stock them online. Definately cool random pick up! Its always better when you don't know something is out and discover it, makes it so much more awesome. The squeezers kinda suck, the netting on all the ones I got my little brother all broke in a day or two from light use. Then that goo ball just slips out of the latex? covering.
There were hollow rubber ones, they suck compared to the foam though. The 2 in this picture are both rubber... I must have been lucky with all of the foam ones I have because they are all in great condition, maybe a little bit harder then they originally were, but they're all near perfect still.
Um...wow. http://mishkanyc.com/bloglin/2008/10/03/my-pet-keep-watch-new-era/ Fans of MPM, Lamour, Mishka, and, well, anything cool, really. Rejoice. PS Still wanna see giant krang. He has haunted my dreams for a few consecutive nights at this point.
Awesome pic, Count. That's some serious Gen-X americana you got there. Or maybe I should say Northamericana. A madball coming out of the Turtle's sewer hangout with toxic pink bloppus standing guard? All you need is a hentai April O'Neil and you'd have THE saturday morning fantasy. Thanks for the pic.
I love your bootlegs to. The one with the big eye sticking up next to the pink devil one in the right corner was a variant of the first "madball" I ever got when I was probably 9, from the bootleg bin at the toy store. That weird ball in the middle is sick to!
