Immortal are on my current playlist along with:

Strapping Young Lad - The New Black (very pleasing sonic assault...)

Also listening to Death - Leprosy to ward off the x-mas tunes on the office muzak...ho, ho, ho

Gonna have to check out Skeletonwitch due to that nouveau-artwork, if for no other reason!

i have not heard skeletonwitch, but i'm putting together my top ten of the year and up close to the top is the new Toxic Holocaust record. The record is a brilliant mix of thrash with some crusty punk.

other newer/newish bands that are good:
    thrash:
Warbringer (think early Sepultura thrash done by white kids from Ventura)
    Fueled By Fire
    Hatchet
Cross Examination (fun party thrash ala Municipal Waste)

    death/grind:
Decrepit Birth (Diminishing Between Worlds is awesome)
Insect Warfare (stripped down grinding death metal)
    Pretty Little Flower (powerful shit)
Hatred Surge (probably one of my favorites, one dude writes and records it all, no shitty drum machines or anything. i dont think he has anything out on cd, just vinyl right now)

most of the 'new breed' of death metal bands that are made up of these young kids i just cant get into. they just lack something. i can't get into all these kids trying to outdo each other technically. i like my death metal stripped down and no frills. the new Six Feet Under is actually pretty good. i love the new Obituary lp and ep. the new behemoth ep is great, their live show is awesome.

if i can think of more i'll update this.

I kinda like that Skeletonwitch, but the vox bug me on my initial listen. Like Cobra Commander singing black metal or something? And do the drums change ever? (And enough with the spiked gauntlets already.)

Turtle, I've never even heard that band. I'll check them out and see if I can tell you anything similar.

I really only listen to crazy, weird, f'ed up black metal anymore so I don't know if I'll be able to help....

It's weird but recently i'm not listening to much straight on metal. Dabbling with noise and power electronics, and then easier listening like Akimbo and Big Business :?

So I'm checking out a couple songs. It's a little melodic for my taste. Not horrible though. It kind of just sounds like Lamb of God or something to me.

Some of Scott's suggestions are good on the speed front, like the Warbringer album for instance, which rules. The melody is really what throws me. I like lots of crossover thrash/death kinda stuff, like Engorged for instance, but there is definitely none of that noodling and stuff there.

The kind of just sound a little like something like Lamb of God to me.

and for the record, I still don't think that newer Decrepit Birth record is as good as the first one.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll be checking that stuff out.

I asked one of my buddies to recommend some stuff for me and he mentioned Baikin's pick, Amon Amarth.

Holy shit! 'Twilight of the Thunder God' just melted my face off at the gym (and almost caused an out of control bro-down in the weight room). 'God's of War Arise' is an early stand out too.

I like stuff like that, that makes me feel like I'm in a Frazetta painting, wading through corpses while smashing someone's lower jaw off with a battle axe.

Skylar, I think it's the melodic part that I like. Kinda like Iron Maiden on Meth. That's about as much as these old ears can bear, but I'll check out anything.

Now, where did I put that spiked gauntlet....

I liked what i read about skeletonwitch more than the actual records.
I would like to see them live though.

Right now I'm listening to Mastodon and it just struck me that they sound like an extension/progression of early Alice In Chains. Like if they stayed heavy and got more technical.

I'm would never consider myself a metal dude. i rely on people who live and breathe the shit to tell me what to check out. But I think leviathan is a flawless album as far as I'm concerned. Start to finish, no filler. I love it. I can't say the same for the albums before or after though.

LEVIATHAN didnt leave my CD player for about a year after I got it, for my tastes I cant think of a metal album I enjoy more. Too bad live it just doesnt work as well.

And the last three Napalm Death records have just gotten better and better.

Mastodon certainly doesn't work live at the minute, now that they are operating as a three piece

This was lifted from what I posted at another forum I frequent.

Reverend Bizarre - Since splitting up theres been a torrent of best ofs/splits/eps popping up. I love them in an unhealthy way. http://www.myspace.com/reverendbizarre

Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom: Title track is six and a half minutes of death metal awesomeness. (be wary though, its a bit national socialist in places :? )

Blaze Bayley - The Man Who Would Not Die. Good, decent heavy metal. Particular favourite being Robot. http://www.myspace.com/blazebayley

Hail of Bullets - ...of Frost and War. Old-school slow doomy sounding DM (!!), very obituary-esque (especially the vocals) and very, very good. http://www.myspace.com/hailoffuckenbullets

The Monolith Deathcult - Trivmvirate. Probably my favourite DM release of the year. Somehow managing to meld gregorian chanting, electronica, vox vocals, and death metal, without being bloody awful. Extra points for having the balls to go against the grain so much. http://www.myspace.com/themonolithdeathcult

Nunslaughter - Released three best of's/comps so far. All good starting points if you want to dive into their extensive back catalogue. http://www.myspace.com/nun666slaughter
