I'm headed to Mexico City, D.F. next month. Any tips on toys to look out for? I'm hoping to score a lemon-yellow 18" blow-molded Darth Vader, assuming such a thing exists, but I'm really looking for Lucha and El Chapulin Colorado toys, and the local knock-offs of Japanese characters. Anyone have experiences to share?
I went last november to the DF. For wrestling toys, I reccommend going to a friday night lucha libre show. I'm pretty sure they're every friday. the street vendors that surround the venue after the show are awesome. there are some before the show, but way more show up for when people leave the arena. day of the dead stuff is available at most artisan markets, but only some of it is unique and worth paying for. for modern art toys I only know of a little store in the roma district called Kong. it's a friend of a friend's store and is very nice. for darth vader figures, i don't know. but i saw a lot of bootleg action figures (many were superheroes, but a lot of luchadores too) in the markets of the coyoacan district in mexico city. I reccommend traveling by subway during the day. It is very safe in my opinion, but crowded. its supercheap at 2 pesos a ride and it lets you experience a little more of how a city with nearly nine million people operates.
Kong looks awesome. I'm going to check it out along with Headquarter, which seems to be a few blocks away.
there is a toy museum in mexico city never been there, but the pics in the site looks good http://www.toymuseummexico.com/index.html have fun in mexico city! is a great city
