There are a few new sculpts coming from Marusan, one of them debuted today, here on the left: View this post on Instagram It's a new sculpt based on a version of the Marusan Original Kaiju Baron that stands upright. Not sure if it's the finger puppet or a rare larger version.
Very cool, I am a massive fan of the upright mid-size Baron figure, the pose is just such a delight and I love the sculpt. I think it works perfectly in the original - though I am still very much chasing a vintage version, of course - as it captures that great pachi monster aesthetic and proportions. This guy fits in super well alongside the likes of the Miura kaiju. Really interested to see what it looks like in a up-scaled version, I am totally down. Might need to see more on the painting scheme on that one to decide how I really feel about the colours, but this is excellent news either way.
This is the one (stole this from pachikaiju on IG). Ive been looking for marusan originals for like 12 years and had never seen this guy till he posted it.
Amped for this, completely. I don't know what kind of attention a Marusan lottery will get in 2022, but I am super excited and will have my fingers crossed for my entry. That is a really long window, too, but hey no excuses for anyone missing it for whatever reason then. Really want to handle one of these in hand.
I dig that new Baron toy, but that original mid sized. Oh man.. so great. I'd be happy with the updated sculpt as well though.
Yep that is kind of what my initial thoughts were as well - the original is just SO good, it is hard to meet the expectations for it. It really is a dream/grail toy. The updated Baron is still super great; I'd probably have altered the paint scheme slightly I think, if I had to tune it a little. I am hoping that there are enough of these (most Marusan toys are produced in decent numbers) that quite a few Skullbrainers can get lucky. Welcome back @3x3is9!! Always such a pleasure to see your name pop up here.
That classic Goji colour is just screaming out to be enjoyed, what a great choice for this Godras. You know, this makes me wonder now, to see Kaminaga-san reviving some of the OG line, I wonder if they will try their hand at reissuing any of the giant size figures? I can see those being super popular with fans, too. Anyhow, this is a great sculpt, and I totally dig the fun pose, such playable value - you can just see a kid (or adult kid) holding him around the waist and battling/flying him all around the room. A win, all around. Going to be some lucky folks at FPF (anyone want to mule for some non-local SBers?).
You're getting very warm. ;p I have not run this by Kaminaga-san yet, but I am going to propose offering any unsold toys to Skullbrainers. Keep an eye out on the For Sale section after the show ends. No promises.
Finally found a few minutes to photograph these guys... Marusan introduced the 450 Series Jet Jaguar in November 2021. The Flesh, GID, translucent Smoke, and unpainted Glitter were part of a single, wallet-punishing original drop. The Painted Silver in classic colors and Painted Glitter versions were released separately at Pop-Up Salons this year. The seventh release--the Godzilla Store exclusive Painted GID--should ship next month. Love how these guys look next to the 1973 giant Bullmark JJ. And there's just something crazy fun about having a figure this big in poly bag hanger packaging...
Awesome! I'm going to have to track down a painted glitter! Is the 450 just a reference number or does that indicate edition size or something?
The 350 and 450 series are references to the original yen price of the vintage toys. Full details: https://sofubiki.com/en/manufacturers/marusan-modern
TIL! I just figured it was a way to denote the size in some unknown measurement system. Thanks for the knowledge!
Since we are on the topic, (and certainly applies to the brands of this discussion in any case) in case anyone was wondering, there is also 380 and 480 figures, which, as you might surmise relate to the '50 size counterparts, but were the slightly more expensive versions of the toys (e.g. heroes) with removable masks.
