Dead C Coil Missing Foundation Nurse With Wound Esplendor Geometrico SPK P16D4 Etant Donnes Bullet in the Head Men's Recovery Project Aube Merzbow I'm listening to the new Death Grips as I type this.
I can't get enough of that new Death Grips... Just downloaded a whole collection of Arab on Radar and some Germs. Gonna rock out this week!
I saw Merzbow live just a couple of weeks ago (pretty awesome gig): The noise scene in Japan is huge and second to none. Some of the first acts I can think of and that are definitely worth exploring are: Incapacitants http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdiWGq8955M Hijokaidan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDmwI8GwtEw Masonna http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmktv963m3k Gerogerigegege http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lG9gm4a9rk Hanatatrash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7p_C9OlN40 Violent Onsen Geisha / Hair Stylistics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKHV7EyPksY Sachiko M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl8IMc-8-N8
^ i'd go all out Merzbow, Keiji Haino and Masonna on this! the Japanese definitely rule on Noise. on the Western front i'd say personal favs are The Yellow Swans and Nurse With Wound. not sure if i can put a finger on KTL and Throbbing Gristle on this one. i figured if i did so i'd have to put Coil and Tool in - but that's different already. all too industrialized. anyone dig Raster-Noton? Noise/Glitch - check out NHK and .SND. am i swaying out of the whole topic here?
http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=US#/watch?v=XUK1xn4DRIY my personal fav if you lot don't mind. Merzbow + Boris' 'Flower Sun Rain'. simply epic IMO
Almost forgot, a couple of Hair Stylistics (Violent Onsen Geisha) shots I took from a gig a couple of years ago: Yes, the naked guy was shaggin the amps Awesome gig!
I love the recommendations that keep on coming in! And feel free to post up more individual tracks (Thanks SPACED & RudeBeast!) Pretty cool Merzbow is still active. I've always wanted to see him live, and Chris Cunningham. Chris Cunningham put on an amazing audio/visual spectacular here, which I wish he'd put on DVD (though, it'd never be the same): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzP49Wrk ... re=related
NOISE! For noise rock I really like Unsane. I was into a bunch of the Skin Graft bands when they were going strong. Arab on Radar, US Maple etc. Lake of Dracula is maybe a favorite. In the early 2000s I sang and did electronics in a Noise/Grind/thrash band called the Blasphenaut. Someone put our 10" up on youtube.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5j7yZ7eJkQ It shows it's age a little these days, but I'm still reasonably happy with that release. Played minimal noise since the late 90s and lately have been using the name lilac. http://soundcloud.com/c-bryan Maybe some folks here might like it?? mmm... what are more favorites. Bastard Noise and Man is the Bastard evol - total harsh digital shards really unique for those who enjoyed the whole load records thing you should check out Neon Hunk. Blue Sabbath Black Cheer are probably my favorite current groups for noise.
I'm not really into noise, but I've seen METZ a couple times when I've been in Toronto and they're pretty fucking noisy, the first time was just ear punishing and then I saw them opening for Mudhoney last year and it didn't seem as harsh. Here's their bandcamp page: http://metz.bandcamp.com/album/negative-space-automat
I need more Coil cds/vinyl. I think the last cd I got was the Moon's Milk 2cd ep compilation. Hopefully they will reissue most of the older stuff. Raster-Noton's got interesting releases too. My favorite so far is Pomassl - Spare Parts.
I never thought of Coil as a noise band per se although there were a lot of noisy tracks and a few weird noisy CDs along the way. I seem to remember an obscure Zos Kia/Coil cassette from circa 1986 (before Sleazy joined?) that was very noisy. "Scatology" and "Horse Rotorvator" are frequently cited as their best albums but my faves are "Music to Play in the Dark" volumes 1 and 2. They're not the noisiest, but everything about them worked so well. I only recognize about 1/4 of the artist names in this thread, so I'm not sure exactly what NOISE! means in context, but for what it's worth, the new-ish Carter Tutti Void album "Transverse" is outstanding.
This wiki page summerizes pretty well what you could define as noise (although the concept of 'noise music' is a bit of an oxymoron) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_musi ... oise_music
Thank you RudeBeast, I'll read the Wiki entry. I'd put it that way because as an "old guy" I'm not totally in touch with what's happened in the past twenty years or so. I was very into "industrial" and "new music" in the late '70s and was fortunate to see pioneers like Z'ev, SPK and Neubauten in their prime, along with some of the very noisy "No Wave" acts of the time. Never stopped listening to folks like Lustmord, everyone associated with Throbbing Gristle, etc. However there are a lot of more recent and current artists to catch up with! Threads like this are a great resource for catching up. A good reminder of how satisfying noise can be.
let's not forget the legendary Pan Sonic aka Panasonic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI7yU2EuF78 i personally am a fan and i personally like some forms of structure and beats in a tune. well, not always
So you have been in touch with some of the best noise this side of Japan I've also had the luck to see Z'ev and Gristle although being 41 I haven't seen them in their prime (but still saw some pretty awesome performances by both including a four hour Gristile gig in Turin, a few years ago, that I remember very powerful). Personally I've been listening and collection noise records for about ten to fifteen years now, with a strong focus on the Japanese scene. When it comes to noise I struggle in considering noise a lot of the music in this thread, simply because many bands like Lightning Bolt or Pan Sonic (both of which I happen to love) have noise elements within their music but aren't pure, unaltered noise. In my understanding noise goes beyond composition, it's more about improvisation and control (or absence of control) and there is no intention of making music because... it's just noise (that's why I see the oxymoron when I read noise and music together). In this sense I really feel that people like Incapacitants, the early Masonna, Hijokaidan or Merzbow, just to mention a few that come to mind, truely embody the whole idea of improvisation with noise as a primary (when not the sole) aspect.
^ nice way to put it noise is a wide spectrum but i guess Keiji Haino, Merz and Masonna would be some of the best, if not entirely the best, to represent the rawness of the genre. i gave up trying to fig out the exact genres of some artists because these days, most everyone dabble in a myriad of sounds. i still am looking forward to catch either of those three live. damn some of you guys are lucky i wouldn't mind TG even. best i got is their Buddha Machine haha
I totally agree and that's exactly the point. I feel noise more than a genre is in a space of its own, more than music it's noise and there's a physical aspect to some noise (like some of the harsh noise artists we're talking about here) that really makes a show more of a performance than an actual concert. There used to be an awesome festival in Glasgow called Install. I went for several years as it was an excellent opportunity to see a lot of improv musicians from all around the world play and many of them were noise artists, including japanese ones. Have a look at the line ups, I wish they would bring Instal back as it was one of the best festivals I have ever been too! http://arika.org.uk/instal/2005/index.html http://arika.org.uk/instal/2004/index.html Re: TG, here's a song from the amazing gig they played in Turin, here in Italy, a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK38JXf8XzU I've just read it was released on a DVD on Mute records, need to pick this up!
Was Wikipedia'ing Brian Chippendale, and discovered that he was in another band called Mindflayer. Pretty rad sounding... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEClnx8q ... re=related Sorry for being behind on this.
