^ i'd go all out Merzbow, Keiji Haino and Masonna on this! the Japanese definitely rule on Noise. on the Western front i'd say personal favs are The Yellow Swans and Nurse With Wound. not sure if i can put a finger on KTL and Throbbing Gristle on this one. i figured if i did so i'd have to put Coil and Tool in - but that's different already. all too industrialized. anyone dig Raster-Noton? NOISE! For noise rock I really like Unsane. I was into a bunch of the Skin Graft bands when they were going strong. Arab on Radar, US Maple etc. Lake of Dracula is maybe a favorite. In the early 2000s I sang and did electronics in a Noise/Grind/thrash band called the Blasphenaut. I'm not really into noise, but I've seen METZ a couple times when I've been in Toronto and they're pretty fucking noisy, the first time was just ear punishing and then I saw them opening for Mudhoney last year and it didn't seem as harsh. I need more Coil cds/vinyl. I think the last cd I got was the Moon's Milk 2cd ep compilation. Hopefully they will reissue most of the older stuff. Raster-Noton's got interesting releases too. My favorite so far is Pomassl - Spare Parts.
I never thought of Coil as a noise band per se although there were a lot of noisy tracks and a few weird noisy CDs along the way. I seem to remember an obscure Zos Kia/Coil cassette from circa 1986 (before Sleazy joined?) that was very noisy. "Scatology" and "Horse Rotorvator" are frequently cited as their best albums but my faves are "Music to Play in the Dark" volumes 1 and 2. They're not the noisiest, but everything about them worked so well. I only recognize about 1/4 of the artist names in this thread, so I'm not sure exactly what NOISE! means in context, but for what it's worth, the new-ish Carter Tutti Void album "Transverse" is outstanding.

Thank you RudeBeast, I'll read the Wiki entry. I'd put it that way because as an "old guy" I'm not totally in touch with what's happened in the past twenty years or so. I was very into "industrial" and "new music" in the late '70s and was fortunate to see pioneers like Z'ev, SPK and Neubauten in their prime, along with some of the very noisy "No Wave" acts of the time. Never stopped listening to folks like Lustmord, everyone associated with Throbbing Gristle, etc. However there are a lot of more recent and current artists to catch up with! Threads like this are a great resource for catching up. A good reminder of how satisfying noise can be.

So you have been in touch with some of the best noise this side of Japan I've also had the luck to see Z'ev and Gristle although being 41 I haven't seen them in their prime (but still saw some pretty awesome performances by both including a four hour Gristile gig in Turin, a few years ago, that I remember very powerful). Personally I've been listening and collection noise records for about ten to fifteen years now, with a strong focus on the Japanese scene. When it comes to noise I struggle in considering noise a lot of the music in this thread, simply because many bands like Lightning Bolt or Pan Sonic (both of which I happen to love) have noise elements within their music but aren't pure, unaltered noise. In my understanding noise goes beyond composition, it's more about improvisation and control (or absence of control) and there is no intention of making music because... it's just noise (that's why I see the oxymoron when I read noise and music together). In this sense I really feel that people like Incapacitants, the early Masonna, Hijokaidan or Merzbow, just to mention a few that come to mind, truely embody the whole idea of improvisation with noise as a primary (when not the sole) aspect.
^ nice way to put it noise is a wide spectrum but i guess Keiji Haino, Merz and Masonna would be some of the best, if not entirely the best, to represent the rawness of the genre. i gave up trying to fig out the exact genres of some artists because these days, most everyone dabble in a myriad of sounds. i still am looking forward to catch either of those three live. damn some of you guys are lucky i wouldn't mind TG even. best i got is their Buddha Machine haha
I totally agree and that's exactly the point. I feel noise more than a genre is in a space of its own, more than music it's noise and there's a physical aspect to some noise (like some of the harsh noise artists we're talking about here) that really makes a show more of a performance than an actual concert. There used to be an awesome festival in Glasgow called Install. I went for several years as it was an excellent opportunity to see a lot of improv musicians from all around the world play and many of them were noise artists, including japanese ones.
