yes! i want pig-face pretty bad! he doesn't pop up all that often though.
i think the sun-man knock offs are a bit harder to find than the fantasy figure/warrior beasts ko's...

Another wacky (and super rare) MOTU knockoff series is Speclatron (clear chests filled with liquid and glitter):

If it makes you feel any better, my GJMB Eternia's Rejects Mer-Men are still more prominently displayed than any of my new MOTU figures.

I kinda sorta remember these guys at woolworths when I was little.

Some think that the line might be called Aquamen and Speclatron is a character from that line. I could see myself being turned off to them as a kid because of the glitter.

    Poppycock!

Get one of these fuckers in your hands first. They're amazing! No, I'm not saying they should replace the OGs, but they're fantastic toys.

At the end of the day, if I saw both the MotU Classics figures alongside the OGs on pegs in toy stores as a kid, I woulda picked the Classics. That's the true test.

Anyway, I'm with silver_lining_man: maybe we should have a sub-board for vintage (80's-ish) American toy lines!

I agree, I was a MOTU kid from the beginning , but I have to say I love the new classics figures, everything I love about modern action figures with that retro MOTU flair.

Here's some of the new MOTU-style figures being made by these dudes from Texas called Astonishing Toys. The line is called The Forsaken Dynasty. I've got the four that they've released so far. Very rad.
    Here's their web site:

I'm with audio, don't like all the "niceness" of the new MOTU line.

Those "Aquamen" dudes with glitter are awesome and so are those Astonishing Toys figures, thanks for the link!

I or one of my friends had that skull guy with the glitter, all of this makes me want to go dig out all the 'cheap' toys I had from other lines that are in boxes somewhere.

The new MOTU just don't like right to me in some regards, and I hate the added articulation at the cost of the way it looks. That said I think they are much better than the second line of MOTU that came out a while back that looked like steroid freaks.

There's just something classic and perfect about the original MOTU bodies and shapes that I don't want to replace.

It's the same reason I like a lot of simple/crude toys from the neo-kaiju world. They have that off-proportion sculpt going on that really drags me back to being 5.

There were, technically, FOUR runs of MATU, the first, than a crappy 2nd line that had an almost Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon feel, more space less barbarian. THAAAEEAENAENAENAENAEN there was the 3rd anime-esquw roid version you're nodding at, which also sucked. Now, finally, the newer series and, yeah, best since the original. But I like the originals most. There was also a repro-series of the original figures, which I grabbed a few of around the same time as the roid-versions.

    Yep
I always leave that horrible space heman out of my mind on purpose,
I picked up some of those reissues in the classic packaging back when they had them out also.

Oh Man are these from your personal collection? These rule. I love that green and pink guy back there.

I'm having a damn time trying to find my dragon riders figures.

Did anyone else have these? They're almost satanic.

Demons and wizards and ogres. They were very metal.

Those images aren't from my collection. They're owned by this dude who goes by "Grizzlor" on a lot of vintage toy boards.
These are from my personal collection, however. MOTU-style Mexican Thundercats bootlegs:

Sort of crappy condition, but that adds to their charm.

    mexican bootlegs are awesome....sometimes?
there are a bunch of mexican bootleg motu figs made with random colored parts and clear plastic accessories that i have seen from time to time.

also, i must add that all those motu knockoffs listed above have graced many of my message board want lists, but some of them are as hard to come by as some vintage japanese vinyl!

    Did anyone else have Blackstar?
    I used to love those.

    http://www.action-figures.ca/blackstar.htm

All of mine were from series two and three so they had the awesome flint sparking chests.
I don't even recall the cartoon however.

Along with C.O.P.S. (who doesn't love cap gun based toys),
and some "air" based toy where you placed them at the ceiling or in the corner of a wall and had a string that various parts would go down. (they were M.A.S.K./GI Joe sized figs and vehicles).

I also had some cracy ghosts that were holograms.. I can't recall the name, time for a google search.

Yeah the supernaturals, I loved the ghostlings.
The other ones I was thinking of were sky commanders.
I remember having one that braced against the wall, tore the paint right off a few months later when I took it down.
    lol
