We are a month out and teasers are starting to come in. So let me post it up here. I'll be having a show at My Plastic Heart April 8th, have about a dozen contributing artists who have painted my stuff sending work as well. This is going to be good!!! Hope the NY crew here can all make it out for the opening. I don't really know how to set this up, but I wouldn't be here, if it wasn't for the toy culture I got to experience in NY. From the visits to the many toy stores like MPH, Toy Tokyo carrying my first resins, and the early NYCC set ups. Truly I owe my start to NY. So post covid, there is only one city I wanted to make a physical return to, and hope I can bring at least an evening of fun and toy culture, because it is the least I can do. Also thanks to Robert who took the photos I used on the flyers.
I’ll have to get photos pulled from some IG accounts of attendees, but bit congrats to Joe and MPH for puttin’ together such an awesome lookin’ show! The contributing artists, Joe included, havin’ some fun and creative freedom with multiple Secretoy/Splurrt toys was interesting and killer to see. Lots of mashups and offerings were available and I’m psyched Joe got a spotlight shown on him and his sculpts/artistry. Long overdue!
Holy cow!! My adrenaline is still rushing from the drop, so forgive me if I sound like a crazy person. That drop was a blood bath in the best way possible. Managed to walk away with my number one want (Spectrum Krono)! The wife and I kept going back and forth whether the Tiger Krono or Spectrum would look better in our collection. And u know I had to grab a couple minis! This was supposed to be our triumphant return to actually attending an in person event. But we had to cancel at the last second. I feel like I’m becoming the king of “cancel plans to travel to the toy event at the last second”. But alas, this is not about me. Congrats to the mother f*cking big dawg himself Joe Merrill! Absolutely stellar show! Seemed like a great turn out in person and everyone was happy, and walked away with something they wanted. S/o 2 the big homie Splurrt and congrats again!
Missed you, but no worries I know it’s a trek for you. Hope to see you at five points. Glad you got some good stuff on the online drop. I was pretty shocked all the spectrum lab stuff made it online. Having him paint my figs for the show was definitely a highlight for me.
If anyone bought one of the Devils Kaiju pieces at my show and you want to dispose of it, just message me and I’ll refund you after Five Points. If you know who bought them please feel free to relay this message to them.
This is a helluva a gesture but this burden shouldn't fall on you @JoeMan. But I like the idea of doing some sort of Devil's Kaiju cleansing. I don't have his pieces but I have Grody he painted that I want out of my house and I definitely don't want to sell them to some sicko. Shredding of the vinyl?
Don't burn it, it'll release some incredibly nasty chemicals. I sprayed over the paint work then heated up my bodhi dogma and chopped it up with a hobby knife and chucked it.
I’m caught in a weird middle area with a couple of pieces that he painted. 1- a pug plane he painted, that Amy sent me when my pug died. 2- a piece that Connell had him make for me after I seen the one and fell in love with that he made for him. Does getting them repainted get rid of the stink. These pieces mean even more to me now that these two amazing people are no longer with us.
I know he didn't use V-color or mad ape ninja, i think he used some kind of automotive paint and clear coat which is probably why they smell, so if they get stripped before repainting then yes the smell should go away.
Someones got to eat it, I just feel bad people have to wait a month for the show to be over and then they probably just got the pieces a week ago. Really sick to think about people who might want his works in the future because he's a murderer. There are people who collect and pay thousands for artwork by killers. The association twists my stomach.
If you want to get rid of it I’m sure throwing in your local trash and then dumpster it will go to the landfill and probably be resting next to some Pop! BS. Everyone has to make their decision on what to do if they have his toys or his paints… no right or wrong answer as it was bought before this… if you can’t live with it… just take the punch on the chin. Don’t try and sell this shit to someone else. Let’s try to let those that spent already on TDK… to either keep what they bought because they enjoyed it , or just dispose of it if they can’t even look at it.
I think getting them stripped and repainted would be my choice. After all, it’s not the toy’s fault it was painted by a fucking psycho. If I did have an actual toy designed by him though, I think I would destroy it. The toys turning into murderabilia is a real concern. It’s a much larger phenomenon than most people realize. I’m sure some edgy collectors out there are going to want to buy them up.
A bunch of devil's kaiju/lulubell showed up on Mandarake today and most of it is sold out. That's really unfortunate timing.
. . . or they might know exactly what they are buying. There are a whole lotta fucked-up people out there!
I was thinking about this last night and the question of disposing of the toys became much more complex as I inserted Amy’s role into the brand. Amy told me how important his toy brand was to them, her and her family. Not just Dave. I have a feeling things like the Groman DK man-thing only materialized because of Amy. And she was probably instrumental in encouraging the line and pushing it through production. When I did the Rot Smiler collab, I did it mostly for Amy. To help get some traction for the brand, to help them as a family. So while Dave might be doing the sculpting and painting. Amy is in the toys too. Will I throw my rot smiler away. I don’t know yet, I’d be disposing if Amy’s memory as well. It’s a tough one. Those not familiar with her involvement might have a very clear decision.
