OriginalFake - Over?

Seems to me Kaws is pretty savvy and he's done a good job of cracking into the 'real' art world, and I am guessing thats where he will be putting his energy now. I have seen quite a few of his paintings in real life, the last batch being a show in LA where they where all round....and yes, technically super clean, but personally, I don't 'get' the spongebob stuff. Perhaps they are simply a way to experiment with colors,all the process pics I see online and on instagram etc are usually endless color samples and swatches.

Having a little experience in the world of 'toy' production, I doubt if he would be able to produce such a large amount of items , so many different sculpts, at this range of quality personally, as production costs easily hit over a million bucks a year....and off hand, due to the great culling of makers since 2008 I dont see any existing 'toy company' able to make that level of investment.

That being said, It would be possible for him to release a few different pieces on his own, his market is strong...but not at the frantic pace that Medicom has been doing them at.



I have enjoyed his 3d work over the years, the pieces are usually really well done and visually pleasing. The last 2 years has sort of felt like an avalanche, perhaps they where clearing the boards before the shutdown.

It will also be interesting to see, if in fact, he does just do 'fine art' without a fashion brand or 'toy' brand if the 'hype' that these generated for him disappears, and if so how that might impact his 'fine art'. I imagine that he could be a 'successful' fine artist and just sort of dissapear from the 'pop culture' world and have a decent low to mid range career in the land of Artforum etc.

And...curious to see how the 'aftermarket' reacts to no further releases (if that is the case)..will prices sustain and increase in value or will it all go up in a puff of smoke?.

But seriously, great to hear your opinion on the subject Frank. He left the toy scene years ago in spirit so itll be interesting to see what happens. I too wonder how the aftermarket will be effected

 

I would love to see the aftermarket prices dip a bit. I really want the dissected set, but can not bring myself to pay those silly prices.

 

You're on, but only if coupled with how skullbrain is going to the boonies.

I'd be curious to see if it the phenomenon went on like this:

1) Kaws toys become hip.
2) Flippers buy out releases within seconds.
3) Production numbers go up to keep up with demand.
4) Enough products available so flippers can't flip what they buy, and accordingly buy less.
5) Medicom/OF can't adapt to (sudden?) decrease, lose money, close shop.

I guess we'll never know. Still, I'd be curious to see the influence of flippers in the designer toy business. Did it affect Grody? S7 with the RVs?

Yes, what is that about? Didn't they retail for around $250 in Japan? I had the chance to get one for $500 and I thought "that" was too much.

let me know when they put a gun to your head and from what I'm seeing there are some on the bay with bids for 800 +.....just saying. Maybe they are just trying to offer a flat price on one stateside. Besides does anyone know how they got theres? Before you throw all these stones you might want to find out. Just my opinion.

out of the three star wars dolls the new one doesnt seem to reflect kaws work very good

Anybody need the Grey Resting Place? I bought it thinking that I'd also buy the Black one. But I was busy giving myself a concussion when the Black one was released. Rather than hunting down the Black I figure I'd sell/trade the Grey. I need the Brown standing Dissected Companion. Or I'd sell for cost + shipping ($355 paypal as "gift"). Offer only good for people I know/trust.
