here's an interesting question for the group: are you a bad person regardless what you flip?

reason being that in the vast majority of other hobbies, flipping is common place and even encouraged.

a lot of people on this thread flip other genres of toys. other toys ok, just not "these" toys? what's the difference?

 

I've avoided adding to this thread as I'm too overwhelmed with real world stuff to come back and argue my point; but Joe, your post sums up my feelings.

Sure there have been a few shitty things that have happened to me on the board in the last few months - I'm not immune - I also just about stopped posting any pics cos it seems to bring out teh worst in some folk. And yehn, it bums me out, but its all minor compared to the good stuff.

Some of teh things which have stoked me of late:
True friends from teh scene being there for me in real-time - guess what, we hang and dont even talk about toys - BUT we met here.
The new wave of US/Jp stuff is breathing new life into teh scene (PK, MVH, Splurrt, MW etc...)
The mainstays keep churning out oldies but goodies (Gargamel show releases, SB bagmen etc...)
The mainstays churning out great new stuff (Zollmen, Elegab etc...)
TAG has made LA a fun toy place again - the PK event was a blast, as was tradefest...and more to come..
By keeping my eyes open, or having great friends who remind me, I've managed to get my fix at retail be it in store, or via the occasional lottery win.

Hey, if my positivity bums people out, rest assured I have plenty of other real world issues going on that are really worth being bummed out about. Life and death issues, not just who was a douche/greatguy/flipper this week. Those are teh things that REALLY bum me out, not toys. Over and out.

That is an interesting point. I've slowly (slowly because nobody wants what I have) been selling my collection of "crap" on the KR boards over the past couple of years. Sure I drank the Kozik Kool-Aid early on, but when he started to piss me off, I just boxed all of his stuff up and dropped it out there. Ill be the first to admit that there are a couple of pieces on my list that are overpriced. A lot of those are just from the fact that I don't want them, but my fiancee still does, so I'll throw them up there with a "I'll let it go for this much if someone is willing to pay for it" attitude. At the same time, however, I think I've sold only about 5 of all of the kaiju pieces I've bought over the years. Even ones that I've gotten in lucky bags and through random happenstance that I'm not exactly ga-ga over I still have up on the shelves. My transition from "over there" to "over here" gave me a much greater appreciation for all the pieces that have ended up with me and appreciating each piece for what it is: not necessarily its monetary value.

I chalk all of this up to a change in taste. I'm so terrible at knowing what the open market value of a given toy is that I would be a terrible flipper. Plus, that takes some serious attentiveness and I'm usually only paying attention to the 5-10 toys that I regularly collect.

OK, I've said my piece and now I'll slide back into the hole I've been mucking around in.

Speaking of other hobbies...

I feel that Pokemon is to blame for all of this.

I used to play A LOT of Magic: The Gatheing when I was a teenager, which lead me to dabble in the Pokemon cards as well.

While hanging out in card stores, you would see people open packs of these trading cards and essentially say, "Welp, I just got myself a hundred dollars." People would literally buy their pack(s), stand in the store, open them all, then immediately sell the shop owner their "rarez" for hundreds. This was much more common (back in the day) in the short lived Pokemon TCG lifespan.

For the record, actual printed price guides could be found everywhere. Grocery stores, gas stations, and I believe Borders used to carry 5 different Pokemon price guides. So if someone wanted to know the going rate of a foil card, they had ready access to a monthly resource that told them how much everything should cost. If you had something valuable, you knew all about it.

Throughout my years, I have been to many card shops and other "gatherings" and wherever Magic was found, Pokemon was near by. As I started to dabble in his Pokeworld, I needed to find people who would actually play this goofy ass game with me. They had Pokemon nights at the local Borders: Books, and More, but I only went one night because every one of my opponents resembled a small child.

When the Pokemon movie dropped (saw that shit opening night), Burger King had the merch rights, and had Pokemon Nights where you could play and trade cards with other "collectors" (small children). Burger King's Big Kid's Meal at the time contained 1 of the100 fucking different Pokemon in existence, at the time. Trading of those toys was also encouraged. You know, gotta catch 'em all, and whatnot...

So there I am, at Pokemon night, at the local BK. I was kicked out of that Burger King that night for "causing trouble". Some kid's parent was wicked pissed about the trade I just made with their kid.

When this kid saw the first page of my trade binder he lost his shit! An entire page with 9 of his top 10 favorite pocket monsters. When he asked me what it would take for me to trade him that page, I looked through his binder, and told him the only thing I would be interested in, is his Charizard. He couldn't have handed me that card any faster if he had a teleporter...

To him, this was a more than fair trade because he wanted that page of 9 cards so badly. And in reality, he's getting 9 pieces of cardboard while only giving me 1. He was going to love those cards in a really creepy manner because that was his "shit". I was going to love selling that damned Charizard as soon as I got to the local Magic tournament the next day!

The deal didn't go through. I never actually had a chance to say anything to this kid high fiving me his card. As soon as his mother saw the card in my hand, she got very loud.

FYI for the normal people, a 1st edition Charizard (which, in reality, is a piece of cardboard with an orange dragon printed on it) would fetch upwards of $150 in those days. Valuing the page of cards of mine that this child coveted, monitarily would have only shook out to around 15 bucks. This is why the mommy was mad.

The moral of this story, is clearly that you should never entrust a child with an expensive piece of cardboard. For a fool and his Charizard are soon parted...

I guess that applies to plastic too..

I hope, at a bare minimum, this can bring a little light to the board.

What's funny is I made some kid who knows my son reverse a trade on Pokemon black/white for similar reasons. Normally I wouldn't have cared and used it as a chance to teach a lesson (I did still talk with him about it afterwards). That pokemon though I had to take him to gamestop on a specific day and wait in a long ass line to get. They gave it out for a week but I didn't notice till it was the last day. God damn it, I swore I was done with this thread....

That's the only real lesson I learned from the entire thread.

 

Maybe if you bought a vintage toy at the time of its release with the intention of holding onto it until you can make a profit.
