I wanted to start a thread where people could post up some of the items that have taken you YEARS to obtain. I'm talking plural. It doesn't matter if it's a toy, record, book, coin, stamp, whatever. Usually these items come with a great story & that's always the best part besides scoring the item itself. Here's one of mine. Yesterday was one of the most glorious days I've had (as far as collecting goes) There is a lot of antique shops my old man & I frequent here in the denver area, but one particular shop I have been going to for at least 7 yrs & it is owned/run by this elderly Russian lady whom is a total hoarder & I mean TV show hoarding. Anyway she has had this toy in her front window for as long as I have been going there & I've been trying to buy it from her all this time & she always told me "nothing in the window is for sale" in this raspy Russian voice. Well, yesterday my old man says to me "today's the day"! So we pull up to her shop & Kevin said "let me go in & see what kind of mood she's in & I'll text you & then you can come in. He goes inside & I'm waiting in the car about 20 mins has gone by & I'm thinking...fuck he's probably in there arguing w/her & now I'll have to wait another 7 +. So I text him & he says couple more minutes & next thing I know he's knocking on the window w/this in his hand. FUCK YEAH! He is made of vinyl 10" & has flocked legs & hooves, his head is a nodder & the hair is glued on! I have no idea who made him & there are no markings, but he is awesome. I think my favorite part was bringing him home & washing off the 3/4 inch of dust on him, cleaning his hair & re-gluing his beard!
When that old lady comes to and realizes her devil is gone, she's gonna be pissed! Congratulations. That's a great story and a really weird/cool toy.
Awesome story Brenda, and incredible figure! Now.. I am really curious.. What is Kevin's side of the story? How the heck was he able to get and/or convince that lady to give up this little guy? 7+ years without budging, and suddenly *poof* there he is. What I want to know is how.
I know the maker of that, it's right on the tip of my tongue. I think it's a german company that made really gnarly looking trolls. I'll try to remember.
Oh man, that's such a good story!! Too bad nothing like that works in my favor, haha! The company that made it is called Heico, they made lots of bizarre nodders, trolls, hunchbacks, just really cool stuff all around!
Hey guys thanks for the comments. Pizzatrash thanks for the info on the maker. Virginia, without my knowledge my husband took my wallet in with him showed her it was my birthday & I guess she still didn't want to sell it "Nothing in the windows" but I guess he then flashed some cash & some charm & boom. It was an awesome day. Does anyone else think he looks like Mr. Tumnus from the 70's animated movie of the lion, with & wardrobe? I know some of you that have commented have grails with stories. Please post them.
Great story Brenda. Your husband is the greatest for scoring that for you! That must have taken some convincing. I love hearing stories like that. Wish I could share my toy collecting with live people. Unfortunately for me my toy collecting hobby is shared with no live people just my online friends who I've never met.
Brenda, that is a great tale and an AWESOME score!! Congrats! Vinyl and rubber devil toys (many with "real" hair) are some of my fondest-remembered childhood toys!
Great story Brenda! I wish I had some like that, but most of my grails have involved being lucky on eBay or meeting a kind soul here... Cross the border and we can hang Lixx. Not too many collectors here either but I think pizza's in Niagara and there are a few in Toronto...
Excellent! Nice score & nice narrative - quite a break from all the "I just spent $$$$$$$$$$ for immediate gratification" pissing contest posts.
great story, Brenda I love hearing about stuff like this. that's a cool figure too. Russian lady is probably balling right now.
^ hahaha! I never thought of that! I have a grail story I'll post later today when I get a chance. Thanks for sharing yours!
That is awesome! If only my soon-to-be-husband supported my collecting like your husband does.. lol . Every time I get something new, he just shakes his head.. At least it's a step up from nagging me constantly about my toys.. lol. And again, congrats on such a fantastic score and an awesome story to boot! Oh, and.. Happy belated Birthday Brenda!
