I dont know if anyone here reads comicbooks, or enjoys good stoerys acompanied by art, but you need to check out paul pope's work, is fan-fukkin -tastic! He has the most loose yet detailed style, and can write a decent story on top of the great art. He has a book out that I highly reccomend called Batman Year 100.I know what your thinking"A super heroe book!? No thanks!" But trust me ,this is a futuristic sci-fi who dunnit, and just uses Batman as a narrative tool. Check out his site and tell me what you think. The Comic Destroyer, Paul Pope @ www.paulpope.com
Been a long time PP fan Lokash. Have a fair bit of his THB work and bits and pieces. He is the sort of guy that drops off the radar for ages and pops up again. I saw that Batman book recently online somewhere. I rarely read much anymore so I am missing what's happening with these sort of artists. PP worked/interned/trained in Japan for a few years in the manga houses over there. Major influence on his work as you could imagine. From what I read his publishers just let him roll along and develop his own style and characters. He did release a short run series based on concepts and characters developed during that time from memory. A long story short, love the Paul Pope work!! Will look into this Batman series. He is appearing in Oz as part of the Semi-Permanant design conference. I'm not going, but I know he has teamed up with Oz design crew "Rinzen" in designing the layout etc. for the Batman series and other projects recently.
I remember reading a few issues of THB a long time ago. I must agree, his work is amazing.. that's nice to hear that he's working on a new batman. Might I also recommend his recent work in DC's "Solo" series... .it's one crazy issue.
Yes,I heard he had done hundreds of pages of work for the japanese company he was working for, then when they got a new owner the fire/let him go.ONly 10 pages of his work were released,I think.I bought some back issues of his books 100% and Heavy liquid , both good.I belive they are available in trade paperback form. Also He has done some batman black and white issues and a issue of Spidermans Tangeled web. If you get the Batman year 100 books , let me know what you think.
"Heavy Liquid" was what I was trying to think of above. This came out a few years back. Sort of in between THB story arcs. I'm pretty sure the story line and characters sprang from the work he was doing when in Japan. It is a great read. I will try to remember to look through my PP books and see though as there is another series that I'm trying to remember.
Paul Pope is the illest. Did anyone pick up the issue he did for DC's SOLO series? His hommage to Kirby was amazing.
I just read 100 years and it was quite a breath of fresh air compared to the standard, polished look of comics today. The story fell short but the art made quite a visual read. His style is very similar to the loose style manga that seems to be popular these days.
Paul Pope is one of my all time favorite comic artists. I have an unused piece of original art from Escapo that is just the coolest. I got interested with THB and have been a fan ever since. Some of the Buzz Buzz comics are just stunning. Haven't read the new batman book, but I remember when he announced it and I will definitely check it out.
The OMAC story he did in his Solo book was very dope, he added a Kirby style to his own art for that issue. His retelling of the Origin of Dick Grayson as Robin was pretty great too. Again,If any one pics up Batman year 100, please tell me what you think so far. Labor Supreme-Where you reffering to the Batman book or a different story?
^ I've been reading batman year 100...the 3rd issue just released and there is one more. It's always fantastic when pope comes out with comics, but this isnt his best work...but then again, the series isnt over yet, and I could change my mind by the close of the series. Definietly not a recommendation to one who isnt familiar with his work.
The Batman story might not be his best story, but its one of the top five batman stories Ive ever read!I tend to lean towards the super hero side, so maybe thats why I like it. His style is just so expressive and fluid. I just scored his 100% tradepaper back on ebay for 10.60!And its signed by the man himself.
have you read a lot of batman? don't get me wrong...i think that batman year 100 is phenomenal...I haven't been to a comic shop on release day in years...and I'm right there for this one... but this isnt Pope's best. Again...the series isn't over yet, one more issue to go, but i am not as blown away as i wanted to be...thus far.
All the Jeph loeb/Tim Sale series.Eduardo Risso's run was good.I didnt particularly care for the Loeb/Lee run. I liked Darwin Cooke's Ego,but it wasnt oustanding.Im sure Ive read tons more, but Im blanking rightnow.
ah.. waiting for the next Long Halloween issue to come out brings back memories. I got the first catwoman one that Loeb and Sale did, I didn't bother getting issue 2 (u know if it was any good?)
You know what ,I passed on the cat woman series they did.I just wasnt feeling it.Not to say it wasnt good,I just wasnt into it.
