Happy Friday! Snapped while peering about from the second tier loft of my Church. The light shining through the stain glass windows was reflected onto the carved sandstone arches
Aloha Tower, Spring 2023. Taken with a 110 film camera... this was portable photography before smartphones.
A view of one of my favorite works of art here in Richmond, Virginia, the Federal Reserve Bank by Minoru Yamasaki. My band recently performed at the Richmond Folk Fest, and even though we're from here, they gave us a room at a hotel right across the expressway with this wonderful view. Since the 9/11 tragedy the Reserve Bank no longer does tours, so this was a small consolation prize for me. Spoiler I had always been curious about how the rooms in this particular corner of the hotel looked like, because this one corner of the building extends into a sharp wedge. A reflexion of the Federal Reserve, looking out of the other side of the "wedge".
Car in the shop for 3 days (hopefully will get it back today). Meanwhile I've been tagging along with my sis-in-law (Korean), and going to her hangouts. Huge Korean BBQ lunch, then on to a cutesie dessert place, then to a French bakery for kouign amanns, chocolate croissants, and tea cakes! She sure does a lot of fancy eating Did manage to snap a shot of dessert stop #1 First time eating a dessert ice bowl, finely shaved ice mixed with sweet rice syrup, topped with peanuts, sweet red bean paste, sliced mochi, and slivered almonds. Not bad! And those teeny cute taiyaki
Presuming the shaved ice place is Sulbing? I've been trying to convince my wife we should go but she always balks at paying for ice haha.
Yes! It’s definitely worth a visit. I was skeptical at first ($15 for a bowl of ice?). She opted for the Asian flavors, Injeolmi Bingsu, but they do have chocolate explosions, strawberry, and an interesting thing that looked like half a sweet melon (bottom half), with a large green cantaloupey looking globe on top. The shaved iced didn’t taste like ice at all, super fine powdery. More like a light refined ice cream, munching with umami sweet red beans and savory mochi with peanuts—very Asian flavors. The mini fishes were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Quite yummy. If you’re going to Santa Clara, be sure to stop in at the Hankook Supermarket, it’s amazing! Dessert stop #2, Croissante, was good but pricey. They import their flour and other ingredients from France, and train their bakers there. I still like B Patisserie (California St. in SF) much better!
She will like Croissante, but if you are ever visiting SF, stop in at B Patisserie! https://www.croissantebakery.com/flavors
While visiting my parents, I found a stack of photos taken during a family trip to Japan in the spring of 1998. These have been sitting in a cupboard (in a high humidity region, no less) for at least 20 years, so they are not exactly pristine. Anyhow, I cleaned up a few that seemed interesting. In hindsight, I really wish I had taken more street shots and people, but I think I was doing this for an art class and so the photos were mostly buildings, landscapes and nature scenes. Miyajima island, offshore torii gate. It happened to be low tide when we were there; if I recall correctly, the people were digging for clams. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Tokyo, Imperial Palace. Nara, Todai-ji temple. These last 3 are taken walking into the temple grounds at Todai-ji. The second is my favorite of all the photos, because it inadvertently captures a family walking by with their young child checking out a vendor stall (perhaps it had some cheap toys in addition to souvenirs and temple merchandise).
@akum6n , nice photos, especially the Todai-ji Temple and Torii gate. The vendor stand and the family gives it a nice touch. Makes me think of my early photography pics (real film! ). I also tried as much as possible to exclude people in pics, but nowadays I don't mind including them. Makes me want to look through my childhood vacation photos too!
Quick 3-day getaway with the fam last weekend to Va Beach. This poor humpback had washed up a few days earlier, so we went to pay our respects. Love seeing Neptune, always a joy! Only one day of sun for us.
Great photo! Textbook example of Longshore Transport process. https://rwu.pressbooks.pub/webboceanography/chapter/13-2-longshore-transport/ Your photo depicts the breaking waves and longshore current perfectly (albeit a gentle current in this case, transporting sediment down the shore)
