whats the best way to get into commission work. do i just need like a portfolio of my work? also i would like to hear how other people came into the customizing world.
I think it's as simple as doing cool stuff, showing it off, and if people like your work, they ask you to do stuff... I did my first custom this month because I didn't think I'd see the color scheme I wanted coming from SB, so I just did it. Now I'm working on a set of 5 figures.
I think that's how Paul started us off on here. He just posted a couple of projects he did for himself and then started posting the commissions once they started coming along. Now he is a super star with his own show and a rumoured sitcom in the works.
since most of this toy world exists online, i don't think that you have to have a traditional portfolio built up. i would say that you should just pick up a few pieces and customize them yourself. take GOOD quality pictures of your finished piece from all the necessary angles so people can see the quality/level of your work then try posting them up on various boards to get feedback. be warned though...if you choose to post it up on KR boards, you will get flooded with requests to do customs. if you are ready to take on that task, then go for it. one of the best things you can do for yourself is to get into a custom show of some sort. if you do get into one, put your heart and soul into your piece...the show will be free advertising for you and will really get your name out there. which will lead to more shows and more commissioned work. a few pointers: 1. please don't beg and cry and plead that people buy your stuff. 2. don't get angry if people aren't responding/commenting about your pictures of your work. 3. be humble 4. please don't try and trade your custom work for expensive toys(at least not right off the bat) hope that helps
