So, I'm watching this on cable the first time and it's a great bunch of fun with mutant monsters. It's the perfect flick to kick off a lazy Tuesday and pretend nothing else's wrong in my world.. Seriously tho. Is this movie not the best imitation of the Godzilla flicks from the Toho days? I know it's more King Kong with the giant white gorilla, but the whole flow and premise is more kaiju.. imho. The only thing wrong with it is it could use a bit less JDM and more Terry Crews, no? How he didn't get cast into this is beyond me.. There's ur movie review like u never asked for..
If you look on IMDB you can see which classic Japanese kaiju each monster was based on Spoiler: IMDb trivia Though unacknowledged, the three monsters all bear striking similarities to Toho kaiju, and the movie can be viewed as an homage to those films. George is the most obvious, being inspired by King Kong (not an exclusively Toho kaiju, but did star in 2 Toho films, King Kong vs Godzilla and King Kong Escapes), the crocodile being inspired by Anguirus and the wolf being inspired by Varan. Although these monsters did appear in the video game, their attributes were changed enough to make the homage more easily identifiable. The croc monster sports the same bulky armored exterior as Anguirus and the wolf monster has the exact same flying membranes as Varan, in addition to similar physical appearance. As a side note, these two monsters (Anguirus and Varan) were director Shusuke Kaneko's first choice to fight Godzilla in his 2001 film GMK: Giant Monsters All Out Attack, but he was over ruled by the studio because they felt the monsters didn't have enough name value to draw audiences into the theater, and were replaced by Mothra and King Ghidorah. He was allowed to keep Baragon, his third choice.
