new molds are being made. it's a laborious and time consuming process that kirby's going through to bring this to reality. but it will all be worth the wait — the lineup of artists is amazing!
yeah, i know... the molds are the biggest p.i.t.a's of the entire process. any previews/news as to who the artists are going to be? i'd heard some rumors, but nothing by the way of a formal roster...
Right now there's only one artist...and I'm holding my tongue (more or less) until we have a working mold. I've talked to a few other artists and hope to produce 2-3 molds a year once we've got a reliable method of production. Thanks for caring...it's been a long, strange journey to this point.
I've been so pumped for this! Can't wait! While waiting for Roto's machine to go online, I went to the Museum Of Science And Industry over the weekend and picked up a few of the old that they have (train, space shuttle and submarine). I heard there was a tractor also somewhere, but I couldn't find it
So is the machine going to SDCC or just a bag full of toys produced from the machine? And once it's working again in-store, do we need to find a kind soul to go buy one for us, or will these be available through the Rotofugi online store? I really dig this first sculpt, although I'm not a big Biskup fan. The figure reminds me of the ancient Sumerian figures on display at the Louvre that Napoleon stole from the middle east (Iraq?).
I would have loved to take the entire machine to SD and set it up in the booth, but it just isn't practical. It's very heavy, quite large and would probably get fucked up in transit. With all the work we've put into this project I just can't take that chance. So...we'll have figures only (plus Tim signing them for an hour on Friday) at SDCC. The figures will be available to buy from our online store sometime in the next few weeks after we work out a few more bugs and stabilize some small parts that are causing trouble.
That's great news Kirby! It would certainly be the most fun to buy one in-store and watch the machine do its magic. My daughter and I scored six animal figs from the San Antonio zoo a few months ago. However, it may be a long time before I make it to Chicago, so I'm happy to hear that there will be online sales.
Got my sweet Biskup Roto-a-Matic figure from SDCC in the mail yesterday! It's awesome! Does anyone know what the text on the back of the base says? It's kinda jacked on mine.
i swung by the shop yesterday to say "hello!" to everyone, and kirby was out trying to get the parts to fix the machine. so i hung out with whitney for a bit, chatted up all about sdcc, and got to see these guys up close for the first time. they're a lot bigger than i had thought! i'm not sure what the back says... most of what i saw were the early pulls that failed quality checks. (apparently they had to reformulate the plastic, as the first batch were too brittle.) super stoked about these, though... and whitney said that the would all be available online as well! (so no need to bombard cask-ers with mule requests! =p)
A couple months ago I took my daughter down to San Antionio to the zoo. They have eight machines there and the elephant machine was malfunctioning. A guy was there cranking out misshapen elephants trying to fix the thing. We got to see the guts of the machine and the plastic pellets that go in. Pretty cool! I didn't think at the time to see if I could get one of the trash elephants. I wonder if Mold-a-rama nerds collect misprints?
usually a nearby customer service or gift shop desk at the museum/zoo will have on hand a drawer-ful of replacements for misshapen molds. i think the rejects can be melted down for reuse in the machine. i enjoy the extra flashing sometimes, but i found that the malformed ones are very difficult to preserve since they're not structurally stable.
Yeah, I like that a lot, I hope they go outside the designer guys to do stuff. I think Biskup was a good choice to go first since he's versatile and can produce stuff that is multi-genre whereas a lot of designer guys have one track-minds....
I could see them doing a lake monster sculpt with zzChris Ryniak. (sp) Amanda Visell could do something killer too.
