Yep, another new maker thread. Hopefully these guys stick around long enough to warrant it, but I have a good feeling.

Shameless Toy debuted in October 2020 with a Gorilla and Mecha Gorilla toy set quite reminiscent of (totally ripping off) the storied and sought-after Hirota Saigansho. With no shortage of homages, ripoffs and outright bootlegs focused on gorillas, mecha or both in the last few years, I expected iffy quality and a single release from a maker who would then promptly disappear. Friends shared the same assessment.

Thankfully, we were dead bloody wrong! The toys seem to be of good quality and collectors are warming up to the maker. To their credit, Shameless has styled each release in a very different way to the source material, opting for different sizes, unique sculpt details and new gimmicks. It's nice to see someone continuing the hobby's proud tradition of cool ripoffs.

Shameless is based in Hong Kong, and appears to use 3D sculpting. Their instagram is @shamelesstoy69.

After skipping the first Kong vs Mecha set from these guys—and then regretting it as I found I disliked all the later releases—I had to go for the first release of 'Detective A', a new toy which Shameless has been teasing since November of last year.

The source material here is Ilu Ilu's Gorz, which (you guessed it!) is one of my favourite toys ever. This ripoff/neo-pachi/whatever puts an adorable babified version of Robot Detective's mug on top of what is pretty much a blow-for-blow Gorz body, redoes the omake and presents everything in a larger size. The result throws out a lot of the detail Ilu is known for, but solid production quality and the large format results in something that stands on its own. I think it's a little overpriced at $180, and would have been much happier with the Gorilla set benchmark of $130 or so per toy, but I like it. If you can stomach that, I think this is worthwhile as its own thing.

Here he is, next to the big (little) man himself. Detective A stands just about 7.5" tall, so he dwarfs Gorz a bit. I think it really works, accentuating the baby/kid proportions and establishing more of an identity for the toy.

You can see Detective A has none of the printed material on Gorz, and his pose is different with perpetually bent arms. I kind of like it; Gorz can't really interact with the world given his stilted robot appendages. The omake is very different, and reminds me of Ilu Ilu's own Pepy micro that comes with releases of Vinydum, but this one goes for a much cuter 60s-anime look. It's lifelike and expressive, imo really solid work for painted-over clear vinyl. The silver sprays on the head, arms and back also stood out to me—they're very thick but clean and even, and I've seen lumpier results from some quite celebrated Japanese makers. Finally, the vinyl seems solid (no smell) and is blessedly crystal-clear, but we'll see how long it stays that way.

I love my Detective A and can’t wait to see what they do next. I’m hoping to find a decently priced gorilla set myself. The quality is very good, though the packing is practically non existent. No art, just a little card in the ziplock bag. But that’s a small nitpick for me personally. This guy has become one of my favorite to pick up and play with, no need for packaging.
Thanks for the size comparison with the Gorz, I was curious about that.

I don’t know why but I can’t get into these. Similar to how I love Astro myu 5 nodders but not the Convex toys based on them. Or most of Target Earth “bootlegs”

I was also in the same situation, but in this case I think that what convinced me to buy it was the head of Kikaider because this is a character that I like a lot and the body of IluIlu is a plus because with the current prices of those figures , they have already become almost unattainable.
