I couldn't help but notice that quite a few Skullbrainers are into doom. I figured why not start a stoner/doom thread.
Re: Stoner/Doom I probably listen to more, but I don't know genres very well. yawning man fits right?
Re: Stoner/Doom I've not heard them before. I'd expect you guys to have a nice doom scene over there though since YOB is from OR. and are often referred to as one of the greatest doom bands.
Re: Stoner/Doom Well I only just moved here so I don't know. And like I said I don't know genres. I don't think yawning man sounds doomy though, just stonery. I like kyuss and found yawning man from there.
Re: Stoner/Doom Judging from those 2 bands which I've never listened to till now (thanks for turnin me on to them) you'd probably be real into Electric Wizard if you've never heard them. Their early stuff is kind of like kyuss. And even their latest album went back to their roots a bit except with a real creepy old horror vibe to it.
Re: Stoner/Doom I like all things Stoner / Doom. I can safely say that Electric Wizard is nothing like Kyuss. Check out Roadburn.com for daily reviews and info on the best Stoner / Doom / Space / Psych / Post Rock / Metal fest in the world. (Now that the Emissions from the Monolith fest no longer happens) The aquarius records mailing list is another good place to get turned on to new bands, of all genres. If I need to list a few bands.... The Heads Brutus Horizont 35007 The Devil's Blood Quest For Fire Ufomammut Church Of Misery Graveyard All Roadburn alumni. And then there's Black Sabbath
Re: Stoner/Doom I love Stoner/Doom metal! Let's just say one of my favorite things to do is a recreational activity and play the album Dopesmoker.
Re: Stoner/Doom Ahhh yes... good times there I think they sound a little like early ElectricWizard in that they have that basic fuzz/stoner sound going on, but yea, definitely not much like them besides that.
Re: Stoner/Doom I fully endorse this thread. I tend to listen to more sludge and black metal, but I definitely love me some stoner and doom. I was so so so fucking disappointed that I missed Cough here a couple of weeks ago... because I was sick. Yay, irony. They are one of my favorite bands as of late. I would say that Crawl Back In are another big-time favorite. Check out their releases for free. I was so happy to get a personalized test press of Hang All Hope from the Nearest Tree. Scanning my iTunes for other noteworthy bands... - Burning Witch (doom) - Graves at Sea (doom) - Khanate (doom) <img src=\"{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"Very Happy\" /> - Noothgrush (sludge / doom) - Saviours (stoner) - Sea of Bones (doom) - Six Dead Horses (stoner / doom - local-ish band!) - Thorr's Hammer (doom) - Weedeater (stoner / sludge)
Re: Stoner/Doom A stoner rock thread with no mention of Boris? "Feedbacker" is my favorite. The live bootleg was up on YT, but seems to have gone. Instead here's "Flower, Sun, Rain" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65sY6H9cKqc I love Electric Wizard too. Here their music is matched to clips from the movie "Begotten": Doom Mantia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4OawzSoxMM Son of Nothing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdKZVN_1V3I Return Trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eL1lPozQ7k Not sure if I got those in the right order, but who cares, rite? If you say 'Jesus' backwards, it sounds like 'sausage', hurr! Hey man, have you seen my lighter?
Re: Stoner/Doom Really awesome instrumental stoner doom band Dragon Green from where I live. Apparently they're still around. Fuckin crushing.. http://www.myspace.com/dragong
Re: Stoner/Doom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPvjlQT_b-8 Salome And the new electric wizard of course
Re: Stoner/Doom no one's mentioned Melvins? wtf? Lysol & Bullhead & the Maggot, etc...often imitated never bettered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7huZ1x1DJSM stick with it.
Re: Stoner/Doom the first time i saw the melvins many years ago, i thought they were just the road crew on stage trying to tune the main band's equipment but failing miserably. i didn't realize it was the actual band until i noticed that they were at it for over half an hour i've been a fan ever since!
Re: Stoner/Doom I know that song...it's called Charmicarmicat! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk-89zL8vp0) just kidding...could have been anything. First time I saw them was opening for Primus in 1993. I fucking HATED it...but my benchmark for hard music that appealed to me at the time was, well, Primus. I haven't listened to Primus since...but the Melvins were like a virus that led me to a lot of music over the years, including many of the bands listed above.
Re: Stoner/Doom I saw Melvins right when they put out that trilogy of albums. A little late I guess, but it was a great show. They did 2 sets with a little guy that had joined them doing a noise set between. I saw Oren Ambarchi again a few weeks ago. Not stoner/doom, but sunn0))) related.
Re: Stoner/Doom I saw the Melvins a ton when I was in HS...they were always opening shows I went to. Never liked them. But I suppose they were better than a lot of the other opening acts that I'd always see. I find it amusing that they're now "legends"...and I feel a bit odd that I never appreciated them.
Re: Stoner/Doom Why has no one mentioned Jex Thoth? Maybe because just like me, you had never heard of them. But I have just discovered this band and I am fucking blown away. Female-fronted (and named after Jessica Toth / Jex Thoth) psychedelic stoner doom. I can't stop listening. Also worth checking out is Sabbath Assembly, a sideproject of Jex's that, well, just read this here: "Album “Restored To One” pays homage to and expands/reworks the apocalyptic purification hymns of the Process Church Of The Final Judgment. " Girls in capes are so rad.
