Wait, who ordered what?
@animator Good call. And I'm still pretty sure "those two" are the same dude. Both appear out of nowhere within two days, both spam IG with "progress" shots within a few days, both evoke the impression they're trying to pass off as Japanese, both have "SAMSON" in all caps in their bio. Only major difference seems to be that toys_institute follows a shitload of Chinese and international hype-beastish collectors, while yamashi.studio follows a more select, but also decidedly influential crowd of makers & shops and apparently managed to generate more hype. Seems to me an awful lot like somebody is feeling out the market in order to produce that next $5000 toy. Setting up infinite accounts and launching a bunch of generic looking toys shouldn't be the hardest part assuming you'd have access to bootlegger-scumbag-level production facilities. I've pre-ordered 57.
If I'm wrong I'll eat my words and apologize personally to the makers but I'm calling bs on this.
Exactly what I was thinking. It’s like the guy is trying to go “legit”
Kinda sad that the SAMSON dude is selling his toy BLANK for 100 bucks and people are shocked by the "low" price.
Can we get more details on this?
my understanding is that he wanted to charge $150 for blank white figures but dropped it down to $80/$90 and has already ordered a few hundred blanks maybe in various colors
He probably just killed himself and his toy using that sale method. Dealer discounts? Screams massed produced in a china factory to me instantly.
@des_yeo03 I said this exact same thing. I immediately assumed this was a Chinese production when the mass pre - order and bulk deals were given, as most, if not all Chinese factories have a minimum quantity requirement for order. I honestly have no qualms with Chinese vinyl, and much of it now is *almost* on par with sofubi(though I personally hold sofvi in the highest regard and quality). But these types of productions and sales flooding is what I think kills parts of the hobby. But who knows? Could be a smash hit since so many people want Hirota, and now they get a secondary of a secondary from the original source material.
There are a few good examples that these hit and run makers, trying to produce toys similar to the hottest shit in the market will get blown into oblivion soon enough.
The funny part is if the person behind this thing just made an instagram saying -look at this cool thing I sculpted from this original source material that is being produced in China at a somewhat reasonable price- I would have actually been interested in the toy. The purposeful lack of information killed any interest I could have ever had it the thing.
@Waterbear No shit, I’d have probably done the same. Michael Skattum, amazing design and toys aside, was completely transparent about his process, through and through. Being totally upfront, especially in this current climate of production, is appreciated by me, and many others I’m sure.
Kaiju Tan really fucked up a lot of his fanbase when he was touting Japanese production and his original paints, when everything is Chinese produced and factory painted, totally out of and away from his hands. Of course, there’s people that don’t care, and maybe none of us should. But I can’t help but be annoyed by the potential of someone being a snake oil salesman and taking advantage of collector’s preferences.
Edit: As far as I know, this person hasn’t uttered a single detail about production. So maybe that’s the loophole route they could be taking?
Although they did post that it's taken 6 months just to sculpt. If production runs long, buyers might also be screwed on a Paypal refund.
He mentions that the photo isn’t even accurate because he added rivets. This makes me wonder if the thing is even molded yet.
the customizer ordered that much? ...of this robot?
I cant tell what toy youre referring to or if 'he' means the maker or customizer.
anyone pre-ordering must really fuckin like that sculpt.
Because at this point, this is an unknown maker, there's no knowledge of the vinyl quality,
and no examples of his paint work.
I actually thought it was cool he declared himself the people’s robot and followed through with a cheap open order. He could have tried to gauge people for 500 and done some fake open run lotto.
What gets me more than the guess of quality is that it’s clear he just finished up the sculpt and even in China it will take 2-3 months to get vinyl. And he’s not specifying this is pre-order, he’s going to have a lot of buyers making claims in 2 weeks, but maybe that’s just a lack of experience on their side. Also he has pictures of rivets on Instagram, why not just update the sale listing with new pictures. The whole promotion and sale seems super rushed, like he needed cash immediately, maybe for factory invoices? Maybe for something else. Hope nothing goes wrong because this dude might not have any of that money he took in for refunds.
To be honest saying he’s the people’s robot as well as all the sales methods and posting feels like a polished version of the bootlegger. Almost word for word. Basically trying to beat HxS to market, under cut his prices and say that this toy is for everyone. Again literally a much less aggressive and well worded way the bootlegger talks.
If everyone is getting a vibe, myself included it has to say something.
Could be wrong, always that chance, but man this feels fishy.
Pre-order. It is advertised on the sales site with a August 2019 release.
oh shid my bad, i was referring to the mecha-creatch by swarmm. swarmm ordered hundreds of pieces and had to bring his retail down
Has anyone ordered one of these bootleg toys? It's not something I would ever order or support but just wondering about cost and quality. Understandable if people want to remain anonymous so message me.
ive thought about it but i feel like itd be a big slap in the face to the artists i collect! im just so curious to compare them but do i need to gamble a couple hundred bucks? maybe not lol
Thought i heard somewhere a while back that the Vinyl they use in China is shit and over time emits gases that are toxic..
Sound like you're confusing China and the ass of @Paulkaiju
In a random stabby mood there stipplemonkey?
Andy should know. He's blown quite a bit of smoke up it.
He's possibly referring to this comment, farty?
