Obviously on this board there are now a lot of customizers, people with airbrush and now with the Solid line, its a whole lot easier to start this as a part of a hobby. Some good, some not so good. There are also a lot of empowering(how 90s can you get?) people and post no matter what someone puts up.
Even Super 7 now is officially on the bandwagon with the Zag contest coming up which I look forward too.

With that in mind not everyone creates a Picasso nor has the skill set of PK, and everyone lands out a stinker, or something not up to their skill set every now and then.
I guess, looking back, to those who are starting, I'd like to say don't get discouraged, we all start at some point, but learn the basics and you can go a long way. Im always looking on ways to improved and I have bounced and quized many on this board.
I am also curious why people do customs, I started painting toys about two years ago, stop for about 6-7 monthes and started up again, stopped again, then started up. It just seems like an extension to toy collecting and building/painting garage kits; which we never see here oddly.

Just curious, why others do it?
I personally like to see other colorways of stuff and see different aps.

The door is open, post away.

Like I said in my hijacked sales thread...

I've always liked Kaiju, and Japanese candy toys... I loved the simple style, simple spray... When I started collecting more high priced "designer vinyl", and Kaiju, I found out I could make decent cash doing customs, and I just liked creating things. I like that people want to own something of mine. Doing Kaiju is just an extension of my wester customs I do... I've always wanted an airbrush, and I've been wanting to try my hand at Kaiju for years... So now that I have, I have gotten good , and bad feedback, and I learn with every one...

I just like painting... if you don't like it, tell me why, if you do, cool... If you wanna buy something, of mine, even better... Just trying to make money to buy more kaiju to paint.

I just don't like the elitist idea of people thinking anyone "new" shouldn't paint...

My post in the other thread wasn't directed at anyone in particular. My comment regarding reaching a certain post-count prior to posting customs was made not because new jacks suck at painting, but because - to me - they seem to be jumping on a bandwagon. It doesn't appear that there's a true appreciation for the form when they show up and within a couple posts they're showing off their latest "kaiju paintjob". Join the community, build a collection, take it all in - don't just blast off painting from the get-go.
I'll also say that some of these new jacks paint better than some of the established, sought-after artists (I won't say who for risk of excommunication). But really the cream of the crop are the incredible fan-based talent that first established themselves as collectors and members of the community.
Really, the whole custom crapfest that went on "over there" was so fucking lame and did a lot to kill Western vinyl. I'm starting to see that here and I don't like it.

first off sorry for jacking you lux!!

there really is a serious bias here yeah im new just like d-lux but the way i started working on these toys was showing a friend my matango dvd and him saying "you know i have a toy of that, never knew what it was" so i took it from him for his ignorance and researched these toys and ended up liking the neo stuff more then the movie based ones, long story short i did soe drawings for fun some people commissioned me and i painted a few customs no i dont use an airbrush but who the hell says you have too, why even try to compete with lash or pk or koji or kirkland when i can do my own thing

Oh I totally agree with people "over there" ruining customs... Seems like anyone with some Sculpey can ruin a perfectly good piece of western vinyl...

But like anything, band wagoners will come and go, and new-jacks that are REALLY interested will only get better (hopefully), with positive criticism... I think my Smogun is far and above better than my Magman I did... I'm just trying to sell these "test" pieces to afford more v-color, and toys to paint.

It seems the issue is less about who should customize, and more about folks selling said customs on the BBS.

I grew up drawing and painting. I got totally burned out from college but all the while, I painted 25mm minis for Warhammer 40K just cause I wanted to. When I paint a figure, I paint with reason. I don't waste color just cause it looks good. There is a reason that color is there and there is a difference between saying "I used (add color) cause it looks good." and "I used (add color) cause it compliments or contrasts the other colors." If you want me to break down a figure I painted, I will. People here don't care much that I use paintbrushes to do my customs. I don't really care cause I'm not doing it for you. I'm doing it for myself cause I enjoy it. I'm not doing it for money (and people know that if they want something done, my first question is always if they have something to trade). Sounds selfish? So be it. Unless you're going to say something constructive, I don't really give a damn what you think.

    customs rule.

it's not the custom crapfest that is killing western...it's the shitty platform toys, lame colorways and crappy sculps.

anyways, who gives fuck about western?

I don't care if anyone likes custom Japanese vinyl. I do. Some people will like it and some won't. that's cool. there is room for both on this board.

    Where's Liquidsky?

    Just playing devil's advocate here....

If someone posts a picture of their custom on a BBS, aren't they essentially saying "I give a damn what you think"? Why post it up if you're not looking for input? Granted...some input is of more value than others.

Who cares what they sell... If they took time, and spent money on a toy, and paint, they should be able to sell it, and since there is a no "bumping" rule, if you don't like it, let it die, or give constructive criticism...

I've sold stuff to people that I didn't even like, but some people have weird taste, and who is anyone to tell them they can't buy the stuff they like...

I don't get why any of us are more entitled to post whatever here than the ones who have just joined. How does someone new on this forum show how much they love Kaiju in general?

That's exactly why it's posted... I post customs to get feedback, hear praise, or critisism... I think everyone does...

It's more of a "say what you want" sort of thing. Anyone can say "oh that looks great" or "P.O.S!" but only a few can say "you should have used (add color) to bring out the highlights more..." or "i like that you used this color to contrast with that one but the shades are a bit close..." and those are the one's that I am looking for. When I painted the chaos for Hiro's birthday, I knew I'd use black and red cause those are his colors, but I wanted more from it. So I asked him...without him knowing that it was for him. Another example would be someone like xoco-dean. When he spouts off things like "I really like how you used this color and that color to create this feel but..." He gets it.
If I post a custom on the board, it's more of a take it or leave it kind of attitude. If you like it, great. If not, fine. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Everyone is looking for input on their customs, drawings, paintings, whatever. However, valuable input is almost like squeezing water from a stone...and that is really what I'm after.

Im not against selling customs, but what concerns me is that it seems a good number of people here now are doing custom to primarily sell, not for the sake of fun or adding to the genre.

That seems odd and very KR-esque to me

Very true about the KR comment, there are just so many people snagging up customs, it's hard not to make things just to sell... I do these types of customs cuz I love the genre, and of course I'm going to try to sell them if people like them... Plus then I can afford more toys to paint... I'm not going to keep all my own customs... I do trades too, so I'm not just looking to make money either...

I've never offered my customs for sale. I have had people pm me asking to make a custom for them, to which I would gladly do...but I always try to trade for something rather than take money.
Having them in shows...that's a different story.

Speaking of trades and not for mad profit, thats the idea behind the custom Chaos swap.

Anyways, I just find it hard to believe that this some how should be look at as a source of income.
