(i'm probably being a hypocrite because i'll probably still be a sucker for unpainteds in specific sculpts and in black and glow but... ) i'm sort over the whole unpainted vinyls being a general release. it's cool if they're in unlucky bags or test-shots where less than a handful exist, but after that.. it just seems like a lazy release in a hobby that already sees too many releases.
I agree. I know some people really like collecting unpainted figures, but I find 99% of them terribly boring. My only unpainted figure is my white CCP Doarat Hedorah, but while it's technically unpainted it doesn't appear unfinished like most unpainteds do. Edit: Woops, I realized that's not entirely true. I also have a flocked Skullbrain, Invisible Skullbrain, Rainy Day Skullbrain, Clear Blue Beetlar, Clear Pink Beetlar, Green Sparkle Beetlar, Jimi's Ghost Exohead, and X-Ray Galtan. Still, I think these figures look more "finished" than an unpainted flesh/black/white/red/GID/whatever opaque vinyl. And the blue and green Beetlars have painted eyes.
Remember when people were going bonkers over unpainted RxH? Paying $150-$250 for unpainted figures? Yikes.
I just got my clear red GB and I wasn't expecting much, but I have to admit, I was blown away by how cool it looks! I do really like black unpainted and that Hedorah looks fantastic! I assume that much like the salvation inks it has to do with the angles and shadows that make which unpainted stand out. Now that I think of it, my blacks are protos... Otherwise I agree with Mr Milk.... In a long and rambling way...
Protos or samples would only be interesting to me if there was a noticable difference when compared to a regular release. The occasional unusual colour can be interesting as unpainted.
Totally depends on the sculpt & the vinyl. I have some clears & some pearly solids that are great. Stuff like flesh vinyl releases do nothing for me.
How do I access that "Foes" list again? Sure, it doesn't hurt if it's a proto or whatever, but I like most "regular issue" blanks just as well. I have a crazy amount of respect for the process sculptors go through that bring these characters to life. Please send all unwanted no-paints to my house, & I will split them accordingly with Abe..... maybe. Respect the sculpt!
Regarding your statement, I think the lucky bag Gargamel Zag with guts is the best example. Besides that, I love unpainted black on most rxh and especially my bright blue unpainted mutant head.
Well said rhino. I like my unpainted vinyls but don't have all that many. The best of them are in colors that really show off the sculpt. However some of the others actually seem to obliterate detail. Anyway, I tend to agree that there are too many as official release.
I like unpainted flesh colors because they remind me of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, which were my favorite toys as a kid, however I don't collect them hahaha. I think companies like dream rocket that seem to release an unpainted version of every release tend to be obnoxious. The only way I would really like unpainted figures was if they came in about 30-50% cheaper just like KT SOLID releases, especially when they are being released along side a painted version, the same price point doesn't seem justified and churning out strictly unpainted runs and charging the same does seem lazy. I'm still to pissed about how the GID obake dogs were released to complain too much about anything else.
I love unpainted releases when they're designed as custom fodder, but agree that unpaints released for the sake of not having paint and still being crazy limited and expensive seem lazy.
