BIG UPDATE, I GOT IT TO WORK THANKS TO siphilon's METHOD, TIME TO DORK OUT WOOOO! OK, So I'll try to explain this as well as I can. I have a Wii and have ONLY been able to get online using Nintendo's wifi adapter Here's how it works: My PC (let's say PCa) has a wireless card, it gets the internet from a router hooked up to the internet hardwired PC (PCb) which isn't mine, in a whole other room. I hook that USB Nintendo router up the my PCa and the Wii get's the internet through that. So Wii to my PCa, my PCa through PCb's connection. Why doesn't my Wii just connect to the wireless router that PCb is hardwired too you ask? BECAUSE PCb SUCKS ASS! It's not mine, it's someone I live withs, and it's a very confusing situation that I don't wish to explain or discuss. It's just the way it is. The ONLY wireless device that will connect to the router on PCb is my computer, PCa. So to get any other wireless devices to work, I gotta piggy back them onto my PCa. Still with me? This has worked fine for me, though, since the only devices I needed hooked up to the internet are my computer (PCa) and my Wii. Now I have an XBox 360 I received as a gift.....and I want it online....BUT CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT! HELP! Here's a quick diagram of what I might need to do, but don't know what products exist that are worth the money (trying to be as thrifty as possible.) The second/bottom diagram is similar to how the Wii has been connected, but the official Nintendo one ONLY connects to other Nintendo products. I've seen other off name brand ones, but don't know if they work well. Straight up, this is a confusing situation, I just want to get this thing online and don't know what type of product/device is really OK and will work. THIS IS NOT A LONG TERM SOLUTION, just for the next few months until I'm out of this living situation I'm in and have NORMAL internet connections. THANKS NERDS!
Re: Video Game Internet Help You know it's really hard to say what's going on. Is the owner of the router a nerd? they could have some strict security going on which is preventing your Wii from connecting to the router directly. For example: you can restrict access by MAC address (a hexadecimal key that is pretty much unique to everyone networkable device). So if that type of restriction is enforced your Wii would not be able to access the network. They could also be restricting access by # of users or IP addresses....there's some many different things that it's hard to know.
Re: Video Game Internet Help No I wish it was actually that complex, it'd be easier in a way. I'll try and explain it: So many people did so many things wrong with their crap computer and setup that it's almost not possible to fix. Again, I'm trying to go AROUND that. Let their crap set up be what it is and try to piggy back the X-Box to my computer that actually CAN connect to the wireless network. This works for my Wii, but that's because Nintendo made a device that works like that (the wifi thingy.) If this was permanent I'd be able to go nuts and fix the whole set up, but it's not my set-up and I'm not willing to sink the cash/time into all that. Looking for a short term quick fix. It's like it's all so messed up that it works, but if you try and fix ANYTHING it all goes to hell. So it's best to go AROUND it all. That make any sense to anyone but me? EDIT/UPDATE: I tried doing this replacing a laptop with my PCa http://www.jakeludington.com/xbox/20061 ... aring.html and it ALMOST worked. Something about "DNS" failing, but I think with enough tweaking of the properties/settings I'll get it. Other opinions/options are still open.
Re: Video Game Internet Help You can try getting a crossover cable and plugging the 360 directly into the laptop, then using the laptop as a wireless bridge of sorts. This would most likely be cheaper than buying the wireless 360 adapter as it's 100 bucks. Here is a method for setting up a ps2 to connect to the internet using this method: PS2 wireless bridge A crossover cable would be much cheaper if this was an acceptable solution for you.
Re: Video Game Internet Help the router should not be dependent on PCb. you should be able to go in and change the settings from any machine that has access to the router... doesn't matter if it is hardwired or not
Re: Video Game Internet Help Dude, it's weird. I'm serious, only PCa can get connected to the router wirelessly for some reason. ANYTHING can be hard wired to the router and get on, but not wirelessly. I've worked on all the settings, spent hours on this, it's something to do with the actual internet service, it sucks and it's just the way it is. It's a problem I have to go around vs. fixing. The internet service even requires "siging on" like dial up, but it's DSL, I've never seen anything like this. There's also no actual DSL modem, they just plugged an ethernet from the wall into PCb, this is what the DSL/Phone set up people did. Again, never seen that myself. ODDLY enough ANYTHING can connect to the router if the router is actually unplugged from the power?!?! EXCEPT FOR PCb?!?! It seems like my only solution (that will be cheap and time efficiant) is to piggy back onto PCa, use PCa's connection. I'm going mess around more this weekend.
Re: Video Game Internet Help No, the router is mine, I brought it in. ANYWAY, the internet is set up as such: Ethernet DIRECT from wall into computer,no DSL modem, the computer is old and crappy, computer has some sort of "sign in" function instead of just BEING on the internet and ANY device that wants to be online HAS to have that program to "sign on." I brought the router in so my computer could get hooked up, since it was wireless, without having to add an extra jack into the house. BUT I had to install that goofy sign in program. The Wii/XBOX/Any computer without that program CAN NOT AND WILL NOT get online without it, no matter what I've done! But if the device shares PCa's connection, it works fine. Long story short, I don't pay for the internet connection, the people I live with do and they won't change it so I can't actually do much but by pass it. Just looking for anything to do that for the XBox since it worked fine for the Wii for so long using Nintendo's wifi connector thing.
