Nothing to see here. Just an idiot (myself) paranoid that no one would sell me toys thinking that bumping my topic might have meant get rid of (like bumping off an ex-wife with an axe or something) but I was wrong and made a fool of myself like someone walking around with bird shit down their hat and toilet paper hanging from their trousers at the same time. (Dont worry I wont write topics anymore!)
Indeed, although for what it's worth, there's nothing inaccurate or inappropriate about the use of the word in Pacific Rim. No need to be pedantic about it.
I was under the impression that Kaiju was the term for any mysterious monster and Daikaiju meant Giant mysterious monster, so they are already slightly misleading by saying these giant creatures are Kaiju. They should just be giant monsters or giant creatures in the US and daikaiju in Japan, unless the creatures themselves are Japanese, then it would be allowable for us to call them Daikaiju, If you really want to be accurate. It is very difficult to be at all accurate when dealing with large masses of people.
Yes of course but they are Japanese. That's their word for it. I would probably have to drop any argument so I can keep saying " ce la vie" or "tete a tete" or " en oeuf et en oeuf".
I'm sure this is only because we feel the word Kaiju is only to be used by hobbyists of our particular genre, and that we are slightly possessive about its use. Perhaps it seems odd coming from the mouth or hand of "Everyman". I am happy to have the free time to be chatting about some "whatever" subject! How fun Oh yeah and perhaps superhappyfuntoy needs to build up his cred with post numbers
I imagine this thread stands as evidence to the contrary. I don't see any particular problem with referring to the monsters from Pac Rim as 'kaiju'- how is this any different from the 90s U.S. Godzilla movie? I suppose some find it distasteful to have this niche interest brought into popular western culture, but not much we can do about that. That said, I like the robots in Pac Rim better.
In the Japanese dubbed version when it is released in Japan, they will be called monsutaa (monster) instead of kaiju. (jk)
