Finally after a LONG break I have finally got my decks back up and running. My mixer should be here any day now and I'm stoked to play again.

I remember seeing a few pics of people who still play. So if you still use your decks speak up and if possible post a pic of your set up. I would like to keep my spirits up until my mixer gets here.

Also list what you play !

I used to play in a club so I have ALL sorts of dance music but I prefer Drum and bass and REAL techno !

O and I will post pics of my set up when its finished :)

It's my old Technics belt drive and a stack of scratched LP's and 45's at my house. The clicks and pops on my well loved vinyl are better than a crackling fireplace anyday.

I am determined to cut my toy spending and actually buy another turntable (maybe two) again this year. I still have my mixer (pioneer djm 300) and my vinyl so it would make sense. It's mostly jungle/drum n bass/ breaks, a little house and indie.

I use Numarks.. nothing special. I still play vinyl, but use Torque (like Serato) a lot lately. It's a fun program, and timecode records is the smartest idea ever.
I just played twice over the last 2 weeks. Both were for an experimental music fest. Played a lot of minimal fieldrecording stuff.
The first of the 2 turned into a bit of a party so later on I played a bit of older baltimore, wobbly bassline stuff, then some classic house. Fun!

2 technics 1200's, a very well used pioneer djm 500 mixer and mackie self powered monitors.

used to play religiously on a webcast some friends and i ran a few years back. we held live sets on a weekly basis featuring much of the dj and production talent arizona has to offer. the sets were recorded during the live broadcast and added to an archive audio stream that ran 24/7. we had a good run for quite some time but could not afford to do it anymore due to the obscene licensing fees imposed.

still have all my drum+bass records (my main focus) and find some time to spin at home and the occasional special event. it's not as often as i would like, but refreshing nonetheless.

spinning at the opening of dehara, le merde and wilfrid wood at lulubells earlier this year...

I got technics M5G's and a pioneer DJM-400 mixer, hating the mixer though, I have had to replace the headphone jack twice on it. Also have a strategically placed SB sticker if a gig makes me carry my own stand . At home I run 4 fifteen inch JBL EONS. Sold a ton of my old hard house and drum and bass records off a while back and have regretted it since. Lots of vinyl for home use but play out with serato unless its a really special occassion, Isp in a lot of new electro/bmore/house, its mainly released on mp3's sometimes months before the vinyl is pressed or sometimes never on vinyl at all. Hypem.com is a great free resource for tracks.

Pic spinning at an OC1503, Agwa liquor sponsored party. Kind of an old pic, I get stuck at a lot of clubs just to get paid, HATE spinning hip hop but can and with serato at least it doesn't cost as much as the old buying duplicates method. Spending 14 bucks on a top 40 rap release that you hate and nobody else wants to hear in a month sucks.

LASH what kind of mixer are you going to run?

Still got my 1210's and mixer- but not set up at the moment. Still all my records which is the most important thing.

Play jungle/ dnb- 93 upto about 05, havnt really bought records since then, but still follow the music religiously through the pirates.

Not too bothered about mixing anymore but wanna get back into production, had a couple of tunes Id made get a few high profile playouts from a couple of a-listers but that was back in 05- havnt got my studio set up at the moment, hopefully when I move house.

Im amazed how popular jungle dnb is in the states, I know a lot of our djs are always getting bookings out there but I thought it was a lot smaller. Is anyone on here familar with both the U.K and U.S scene- is there much difference?

i play records everyday...on a cheap sony rack system,,,no less

i do have two 1200s and a djm-300 stored away at my mother's house in nj,,,next time i head over to the states for a visit,,anybody interested in buying some equipment??

yes,,i experienced a lot of both scenes in the early days (93-2000)...up to then,,both scenes were VERY different...too much to go into on a board chat,,,maybe over a cup of tea and a spliff sometime ;)

i have a feeling that over time,,there are probably more similarities now between the us & uk scenes,,,that is a guess as i rarely go out anymore...

interesting thread as I just dug out my old records this week and was thinking about getting a new deck so I could listen to them agin.
I used to spin deep drippy house with lots of soul, and hard, banging Swedish and italian techno.
I don't go out anymore either, mostly because Boston has absolutely no taste in club music (and hasn't for far too long), but I can recall some great times in the early 90s up until about 98. I've probably seen a few of you out from time to time but we didn't know each other at the time.

Hey definitely man- we still have to organise the London Skull Brainers Christmas meet....

I can imagine it is different, but like you mentioned I bet they are more similar nowadays as each sub genre of the music has matured and really found its own niche following. Its crazy though as Jungle was the music I grew up with I always saw it as the english equilivent of Hip-Hop, meaning it was a street peoples/ urban music that had the same 'Do it yourself' nature of hip hop with bedroom producers and illegal raves and pirate radio ect. But I guess, as with Hip Hop, as it has spread and more and more people are listening to it and making it, the different types of people that it appeals to broadens also and then mixes back into the whole thing, creating new sub-genres.

I suspose any music's sound and infulences are only about the people who are listening to it. Maybe im not explaining it very well, its just to me Jungle was the music from where I am from, some of the biggest producers and DJ's pioneering the sound lived just down the road and there was a time where you would here it playing out of every car around the way- I guss im just susprised how it has spread all round the world. Its kool though really as so much stuff we have in the U.K comes from/ is infulenced by the U.S, its good to see stuff spreads both ways. :D

yes samba,,the parallels you draw between early days hip-hop & early days jungle/d'n'b resonate...

until 94'-95',,,jungle was a very localized "london thing",,,not including the growing essex & midlands (coventry/leicester/birmingham) scenes...

much like until 86',,hip-hop was a new york thing,,even places like philly (schooly d,,steady b) were seen as outsiders,,,growing up in new jersey,, i was an outsider but was still close enough that i could listen to the wbls & kiss mix shows every friday & saturday to keep up with the newest tunes..

i remember when stuff like nwa/2 live crew first appeared,,they were seen as jokes,,nobody considered that regions like the south or west coast could foster a hip-hop scene...much less the rest of the world....

wow have things changed!!!! both hip-hop & jungle have worldwide followings & are definitely watered-down from their orginial localized scenes....

Yeah most definatly man- I remember when it was more all together under the one banner of 'Jungle' and I also remember as it grew each of the important tunes that came along and begun to start their own little sub genres and the labels that started to pioneer their own sounds- Its amazing stuff really, but its still all good as there is still ( what I would cvall the original element) representing and carrying on like it always has, theres just all the other types running along beside it.

Its good though as now its so diverse that there really is a different type of DnB for any mood your in or what your feeling.

Wow this thread tured out great ! :)

I used to use a DJM 600 which I really loved. The fader was nice and smooth cutting and effects where just enough for dance. When things got a little tight I had to sell it. Now that I'm getting back into things I decided to pick up a Vestax PMC- 06, the mixstick. After some thought I decided to go with this as I will be playing in house not out so I don't really need effects.I just wanted the essentials of what I cared about most which is a super smooth fader. I like my tables set up battle position so this mixer is perfect for that. I really want to get back into practicing my tablism and this mixer is made for that. Not to mention I had just wanted one for quite some time, so when I saw one on ebay for cheap I said this is perfect timing.

Man I think way back when I stared going to raves, I liked trance but when I heard jungle played dead right I was all hooked. I wont forget it, it was Grooverider and Mc GQ in NY. The sound was so crunchy, techy and raw. After that when a friend of mine taught me how to play I was dead set on jungle, it was a I FART A LOT how ever to teach my self how to play it as all he knew was house. I think that's why I did so well on other music. If you can lean to Dj playing D&B as your first style of music you can play just about any form of dance music.

The scene how ever was always small here in CT and Mass. Even in NY around 1999 it was still pretty small. But I really loved the sound.

It was jungle and hardcore for me, then when I stared to play I played house to get out in teh scene. Once out and able to play what I felt I played hard trance. I had to play this as there was NO WAY jungle would get any love. Not many around here even liked trance as they thought that was to hard !!!. There where some good times but when things grew more into playing vocal tracks because they where on the radio I had enough. Its a reason why I stopped, I grew tired of drunk bar sluts requesting garbage vocal radio tracks. I started to hate playing out so I just quit.

The last time I played out was at the Muni in Hartford in a contest against a DJ called Mama C. We tied for 1st and I blew a speaker in the process, it was a great last time out.

Man o man, I remember the tunnel in NY and the hardcore room up stairs behind the sling steel door. Damn I miss that place, SOOooo many good parties there.

This thread brings up good memories !

Damn I don't remember, but it was close to the end of their existence. It was a contest to win a spot at the next party. And although I won I passed on the winnings.

The muni ant bad, but it wasnt great. Kind of a last resort if their wasn't a real party going on.

I was looking at some old tapes and I have a FULL video recording I made of a part called Youve got music. I gotta find a way to get it to DVD.

That rave act totally fucked eveything up. Alive at the civic center was incredible. It was a huge event, not whistle huge, but huge for CT. I remember Josh Wink played one of my favorite sets of all time.

NY raves where always a wild ride. The good ol days. Did you ever got to a party at octagon called feast ?? I think that was the name, it was a yearly around thanksgiving.
