Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. For those of you who want to be referred to by your real name, why not just have your real name as your handle? Related to this, I never understood why this happens: John apparently knows Scruffy's real name is Mike. However, Scruffy isn't using his real name for posting, he's using a nickname. So why is John using his real name?
hey roger- i agree with you - michael kidding aside, i think its nice sometimes when people you remain in contact with or trade with or whatever remember you and vice versa- its a little personal touch to the digital veil. similar to waiters or store clerks remembering your name
I know one board member/mod who excels at remembering real names, and uses them to address people here (as opposed to screen names.) That always impressed me as being courteous, but for my part, I generally won't address someone by their real name unless I'm pretty sure it's okay with them. To reiterate, if someone posts their real first name to this thread, I think it's fair to say that it's okay to use it publicly, although I reserve the option of switching back and forth. That was Pogue's rule when he was a mod here. He seemed to make it up out of thin air after I requested that my original awkward screen name be changed to "Dean." I don't know if the rule currently applies but there's no harm in asking. As of this response 60 board members have shared their first names. Cool!
I'm curious as to how many active (posted in the last month?) members there are here... We need stats! A survey monkey! (Whatever happened to that survey from hmm, last year for the guy who was writing a paper? He said he'd published the results but never did...)
