Ok, so here's my ultra-thread (thanks to meanmistert for the thread title) where I'm going to put up the stuff that I paint . Thanks for visiting, everybody. Also, after meeting a bunch of you folks in real life, I've decided to change my board name from "midnight26man" to just Dustin. I think it's better this way. Alright, so on this Mutant Head, I tried to balance the Kirby Krackle feel while still keeping some loose sprays and being mindful of GID aspect of the figure. There are yellow, pink, and clear blue sprays over the GID base. The dots I did by hand. The real challenge here was trying to make the 2-D "energy" effect work on a 3-D figure without the whole thing falling apart and looking silly. I think it works, but I'm sure you guys will let me know if it doesn't. In this picture, I was playing with the lighting and trying to exaggerate the effect by blowing out the white (no after effects). I think it's kinda cool: Hope you like it, thanks for looking.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head very cool MH dustin! The "2d energy dots" looks really sweet, and the simple sprays don't fight the dots for attention it goes together pretty nicely! Phil- whose keeping his handle.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head I would complain the black dot work is a little too similar to some illustration work I have seen Lamour Supreme do on some figures, but you've done such a great job I can't fault you. I like the way you followed the contours of the sculpt, and I think you really nailed it leaving the eyes blank.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head that's awesome dustin. i only saw the glow shots on your phone at the gargamel show and they were stellar. the color is awesome; you've really seemed to retain the glow while still painting it quite nicely. if it didn't glow, it would still rule. extra double props for you.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head nor is he the only one that uses them... dustin's photo is also suffering from yellow light. I tried to balance it out from what I remember but I think I'm still a bit off...or maybe a lot further off If you're using a point and shoot, aim it at something white til it balances out the light then point it at your target.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head hey Bert; yer actually pretty close on the white balance; I nipped a copy of your fix and dropped it on Adobe Bridge; auto color took out only 13 points of yellow on the yellow/blue scale and added 4 on green/magenta scale...easy fix! I used to have to do that in LaB color mode a lot. My own photos are almost always too yellow! And it's still an awesome paint job!
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head Thanks, everybody, for the kind words. I'm glad the effect works and that you guys like it. Bert & Poysntixels - Thanks for the photo advice/help. I use a DSLR but I think my problem was that I was using a lamp to light the photos. I took the "in the light photos" right before the "in the dark" ones and I agree that the yellow light looks weird. Thanks for taking the time to clean it up for me, Bert.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head I'm just a little bored since I'm not working anymore. I'm not even sure if those colors are close to what you painted. I think my pic is a little more saturated than the real thing. Dunno...my eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head Dustin, great work man! I'm loving these "dots" that you've been doing lately. It really works well on this sculpt. And adds a very nice touch when it's glowing. I may have to give you something to paint on soon.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head Dustin, that's awesome! Great job on the custom. So is the fig GID or is the paint GID?
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head Yeah, what Bert said. I sprayed over most of the base GID with yellow and pink. Left the eyes alone so that, in they dark, they'd glow a little brighter than the rest of the figure. I'm not sure if that comes across in the pics.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head wow very fresh!!! awesome colors and subtle fading in contrast to black dots so cool, giving fig a great tension. maybe dots are a little bid heavy, a little less or gray ones might do too. keep it up! ...oh and great fotos!
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head Those eyes now glow like beacons on my shelf. My Mutant Head deserved a second chance. Thanks again Dustin--beautiful work!
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Mutant Head So I recently bought the newest edition of Space Hulk and I've been (slowly) working my way through painting the terminators and genestealers that come with it. I'm not turning out golden demon stuff or anything like that, but painting those minis has really renewed my interest in painting tiny, little things. This guy started out as one of the milky micros from SDCC. I sprayed him with a base coat of clear red V-Color and the rest is all done with brushes. Thanks for looking.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Micro Oozebat: 7/27 Hahaha...you're in miniature painting mode from doing all those Space Hulk minis. If you do a wash and another drybrush, you might get a little deeper color variety. When I did minis, I would do at least 2-3 wash+drybrush to really get the highlights out. Still a pretty cool little guy.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Micro Oozebat: 7/27 Hahaha! The Gargamel micros really are gummy-sized. Time to work on more flavors...
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Micro Zagoran: 8/2 Another Micro. Sprayed with clear green and clear blue V-Color, the details were all done with a brush. Nothing too crazy here, I just wanted to do a nice, tidy Zag to give away as a birthday present. Thanks for looking.
Re: Dustin's Ultra-Thread: Custom Micro Zagoran: 8/2 Those are great. These are pretty fun to paint. My girlfriend had me paint hers, because she couldn't see them on the shelf!
