Looks like I might be shutting the board down for 12 to 24 hours sometime soon in order to do some big updates. I can technically leave the board up in the interim, but we'd probably lose about 12 to 24 hours worth of posts. Which would you guys prefer? Down board and no loss of posts, or up board and loss of 12 to 24 hours worth of posts? Discuss.
You might temporarily change the banner at the top with a message about the shutdown so everyone knows what's happening. I imagine not everyone is going to check in on this thread.
I have to say, this is probably one of the saddest, but most honest things I have read on Skullbrain. Oh addiction, I know ye well. I throw my hat in for down as well. This place could seriously use a regular 'cooling off' period if you ask me. We might need to start scheduling regular maintenance days.
The issue with this is most people who use mobile (or all I don't know ) wouldn't see the banner because there isn't one for the mobile layout. There's no way to send a mass message like those forums do when you sign up? Though that'd mean anyone who has email alerts would also receive an email..
I want to see what everyone thinks about the new forum software before I switch everything over. There's a test server set up at the link below, and you can log in and post and check things out. 99% of avatars won't transfer over unfortunately, and custom PM folders that you may have set up will be gone (but all your PM's will still be available), but everything else should be there. Feel free to try it out and post about what you think! http://skullbraintoys.com/forum/index.php
I do not like how external links have been converted to usernames and stored in our avatar/name field. I liked the little badges at the bottom of the post field for flickr etc
I would like to see a "View Active Topics" link in the navigation. That's my landing page when I come to the forum, and does not seem to be an option in the new template. Also, it could use a different mobile template. The one we have now is nice an compact. It looks like the new software converts to mobile automatically, but a lot of the fonts are just too big.
I haven't gotten a chance to navigate all the different aspects but i do welcome the more modern bits. Mostly its going to be getting used to any changes to the home page and the movement of certain functions around the site.
Crap I need to learn to read. We're moving? I hate moving! Seriously though why? I like the current layout it's like an old friend when I come here. Black strip on top and plain white background everything just the right size. Easy to read and scroll- follow things. New layout has too much open space on the sides of the posts.
The functionality seems pretty smooth, but yeah, it looks like the code equivalent of a bad condo. The 'conversation' system leave a lot to be desired, too.
I think I will really miss the old simple layout as well, kind of the broken in pair of shoes/chesterfield that fits you so well and knows just how you like it. Heck, I still like the old banner. And oh boy, so I really hate moving too, Lixx. Sigh, guess change is inevitable though, in all things.
