Wow, they packed a lot of detail into the 6 inches. Great photo, the coloring of the toy and the lighting are great.

I like the detail and blue/silver color scheme on this little guy! If you're taking picture requests, could we get one of the back?

oh, and thanks for answering my question, Geo :) too much processing on this for me to enjoy - doesn't even make me think "photo" when I see it, but some people are into that sorta thing.

I love the toy and I love people playing with the photos! Any chance of doing a before and after side by side. That would be fun!

I experiment with the digital images for fun. Sometimes I like the results, other times I don't. But it is the process of trying different things that I enjoy more than anything.

I have no qualms about using software to edit the raw images. In the vast majority of cases, I am definitely NOT trying to achieve photorealistic results. Usually, it is just the opposite - i often like to accentuate or emphasize one or more of a toy's attributes (e.g., claws, eyes, surface textures, colors...), or try to create an interesting "atmosphere" that looks nothing like the toy sitting on the shelf. I don't subscribe to the belief that there is a right way or a wrong way. I just try to acheve results that are pleasing to me (yeah, I know, how selfish).

The reactions to my pics vary drastically, and are often at the extremes of strongly positive or strongly negative. That's fine. It would be a very boring world if everyone reacted in exactly the same way to any one thing. So feel free to puke if it makes you feel better. I would encourage you instead, however, to try your own hand at having "fun with photos" - you might find you enjoy it as much as I do.

Here are the befores and afters of a couple of the pics above. In each of the two pairs of photos, the first is the completely unprocessed image straight from the camera with no adjustments whatsoever (nothing at all done to brightness, contrast, color, etc.); the second shows the image after I have played with it for a while, using fairly extensive processing, going beyond simple brightness and contrast adjustments. Both pics were taken on the kitchen table with just the normal lighting in the room (hanging lamp with single bulb halogen spot directly overhead and some additional ambient light).

First set:

This unprocessed image (and the unprocessed image in the 2nd set below) would probably not look too bad with just a few quick adjustments to the contrast and shadows, and some minor corrections to the background. This would be my normal basic work flow.

Image

Processed image (I was surprised to see the scratches in the surface of the table - these aren't really noticeable in "real life" under normal lighting. I decided, however, that I like them in the image, as though they were caused by godzilla's claws. I also decided to keep the "ghosting" around the figure that occurred just as a natural result of the processing - sort of a radioactive glow.)

Second set:

Image

Unprocessed image straight from the camera.

Processed image (also slightly cropped).

Cool, thanks! That is fun to see and the lively discussion is always a good distraction. After a lifetime of hearing idiots say "make it pop", someone does. Then everybody gets excited. Good times.
