Post How do you make your customs GID?
Hi,
A question for customizers out there. Can you make a toy that does not have a GID base, into a GID figure, by using special paint or additives? i.e. adding zinc sulfide to paint, and using that to customize the toy? I imagine there might be a risk of the altered paint, reacting negatively when used on the toy?

Just wondering about the mysteries of GID :)

I have made my own paint out of GID powder.
It is a bit to course for the average airbrush. It will work, but it takes a long time to clean the airbrush. Also, it clogs constantly. I've used it successfully for small applications (eyes etc.) and not as successfully for bass coats.
If you have an airbrush that can handle the courser particles, I've seen pics of guys who have painted there whole cars.

This was a KT solid Chaos that I brush painted 2 colors of home made GID paint on it. I used the clear v-color and just mixed the powder in.
The one issue is that when you brush it on it isn't very smooth. It's OK though.

I was thinking of mixing it with a clear, not necessarily Vcolor, then pouring it in a clear vinyl toy.

Ya, that works out nice. It may have been the thinner in the paint, but the clear vinyl got very very soft for quite a while. It stiffened up after a couple of weeks. I had trouble getting a nice even coat on the inside, but got a good one after a few tries. If you come up with a trick for this let me know. Also, it seems to be fine, but I get worried about the paint scrapping from the articulation points.

Chris, that rules....

i've also tried the GID powder. Like you said, it's pretty coarse and doesn't work too well in airbrushes. I've given up. It clogs my airbrush everytime and it's a real pain to clean out. It's more like fine sand than powder.

If it's a clear base, I'll just pour GID paint inside and leave it all apart to let it dry.

from toybotstudios' flickr (but he never took the glow pic)

both of these were clear and all I did was pour in the paint, swirl it around and try to make the coat even, then let it dry a bit before I pick it up to paint.

Whoops! Forgot to say, Thank you! It's interesting to see your comments and photos with GID-ifying custom painted toys. There's just something hypnotic about glow-in-dark! :P

Can you put the GID powder in a food processor to make the grains smaller? I'm pretty sure you can put sugar into a food processor and basically turn it into powdered sugar. This could make it easier to use in an airbrush.

krylon has GID spray in 6 oz. cans. Works okay, but is best against very light, clear or silver metallic backgrounds. The more it is mixed or covered over, the less it can glow. Also, seal first it is solvent based acrylic (i think).

Take a look at my flickr. I won't post it here since it's a platform toy. It flows better than the pic shows. I plan on adding another coat or 2 of the gid. I was surprised it worked through the paint

I used the powder from glowinc. There a half an once I mixed into white paint and put three coats on before I added the brown
