Galactic Penitentiary Escapee










I had a pro photog friend come over and take a great series of shots last night… these are not those pics… these were just snapped on my workbench, and are presented here pretty much straight out the camera.

So honored to have been included in the show… thanks to TAG and to Mr. C. Little in particular !

It was a blast to do this piece, and I’m pleased with how it came out. I was very much thinking about 70s sci-fi paperback novel covers and the character designs of Alex Toth as I worked on this. Of course, as ever, big thanks to Paul, for sharing the lurid flowers of his imagination with the world… long may he continue to do so!

Hope some of you get to check him out in person this weekend!

Thank you very much for all the positive comments, guys! Very much appreciated! I put my all into this one, for sure, and for the slow way in which I work, the timeline was very tight. Throw in traveling to NJ for my sis' wedding, getting ready to move to a new home, and all the usual life busy-ness, and I needed to use basically every spare moment on him, even when I totally did not feel like getting into it... rather insane-making!

There are a lot of hidden reflective effects not coming through so well in these shots; hopefully my friend's series captured them better. The cracks on the legs and arms were painted with a reflective mauvurple color that's pretty cool; the fin has some blue metallic mixed in; the teeth were washed with a reflective sage green at the tips; and the gauntlets/veins/belt details/hair all have metallic effects to varying degrees, too.



Painting it did the exact same for me, David! I really wanted to honor/complement/bring out the best in this fantastic, involved sculpt... there's just so much to it, and so much I didn't even realize was there until I started working it! It's one of those great examples of a creature design that is basically, powerfully symmetrical, but with just the right amount of kink and quirk worked into the details to throw that symmetricality a bit and make it seem organic and "real". I've fallen deeply in love with this sculpt through the customizing process.

My god mike.....you really need to start doing more customs. This is amazingly clean, and the colors are great. Fantastic work.

For some reason I thought this was meant to be where all the Kaisers went.

This was a lot of fun to do. I needed some warm up for future diorama projects.

Unfortunately it seems like a dying art.

WOW- thank you very much, Phil! Dude, yours was one I hadn't seen before John's pics went up last night. There were a couple pieces that were on his Instagram but not on his Flickr, where I first looked, and I believe yours was one. When I spotted it, I was like "OOOH! Whose is that?! NICE!" I always love your color choices- consistently tasty and expertly applied! Love the way you handled the head, and the fades on the eyes are gorgeous. Your stuff is always so well tied together- never a color in the mix that doesn't work really well with the rest of the piece.

Today, but I was lucky enough to get one from the show from someone that lives in the area. :3
