Post Latest KaijuZoo Commission
Hey SBers, I'd be pleased if you check it out !
This is the original 8'' Bandai GMK Godzilla vinyl and it weighs in at 8 ounces. After "statuization", it is a solid 16 ounces! That gives the heft and feeling of a statue. The process includes filling the sculpt pieces with papier mache and then drying for a few weeks to remove all the moisture, next gluing the joints in the proper position and then detailing the joints with art putty to make the seams disappear. And of course the last step is the painting, the most fun part. Check out the interference color-shift paint on the fins - they can't make up their mind if they're red or pink!
Image
And click here for more pics of the KaijuZoo Bandai GMK Godzilla. My client wanted his GMK to be patterned after a previous KaijuZoo design which worked well on my KaijuZoo Godzilla 2005.

Of course the GMK eyes and sculpt itself looks evil and sinister as he was depicted in the 2001 movie but the black, purple and gold paint effects also give him a regal appearance as is befitting the "King of the Monsters"!

Very nice work. I really like the colors.

The GMK Godzilla is my personal favorite. I think CCP is about to come out with one.

Post KaijuZoo Custom Commission - M-1 JET JAGUAR
Greetings,
I completed a glowie M-1 Jet Jaguar for a client the end of last year, and then that lead to another Jet Jag commission for a different repeat customer - this time the unpainted M-1 Jet Jaguar from the Lucky Bag set.

Here's a really neat before and after pic!

Greetings,
I am getting lots of positive response over on ClubTokyo so I thought you all might want to take a look at my latest exclusive series, the KaijuZoo Marmit Anguirus '68.
Image

And click here for the very cool KaijuZoo Marmit Anguirus '68 SlideShow.

This is my seventh series of exclusive figures and was limited to only three and is sold out. But if you like what you see, perhaps you'd like to consider a commission on one of your favorite figures or maybe one that I have in stock.

Later this summer, I will have completed my 100th custom figure, could be that one will be yours !!

Please let me know whatcha think !!

although i don't own any bandai stuff i really like the paint on them sometimes. on the right sculpt the more "realistic" paints look really nice. to cut to the quick...this piece reminds me of that type of stuff and i personally dig it. nice work.

KZ I think your work is stellar. You make the Bandai toys so much more interesting IMHO. Angilas (so many transilterations ... I never know which spelling to use) is one of my favorite Godzilla enemies ... his spikes make for compelling toys. You're really added a more "realistic" reptilian dimension to the toy here. The Jet Jaguar custom above is just amazing. If I didn't know the "before" figure, I'd assume that the "after" was a flawless vintage piece. I've seen your work before and will visit your site again tonight to take a more thorough look. Thank you for posing the pictures here. I look forward to seeing more of what you're done.

Hey DB, Lash & XoCo,
Thanks for your thumbs up compliments about my work, very much appreciated!!

As for Angilas, the official Toho romanized name is spelled Anguirus, based on the katakana Ahn-Gi-Ra-Su. And the orginal name and concept was derived from the similar looking actual spiky dinosaur, the Ankylosaurus.
Image
From this image which I just found, it turns out that my color choices for brown and gold are quite similar.

As for Anguirus' place in the history of the Godzilla and kaiju films genre, Anguirus is special as he was the monster featured as the first antagonist for Godzilla in the second G-flick, Godzilla Raids Again (1955).

OK, history and pre-history lesson over, thanks again !!

My client is a big fan of the Trendmasters Toho kaiju series and especially loves the SpaceGodzilla and its colorful paint design with the wild and wacky "tie-dyed" effect - herewith we are quite pleased to present our homage!
Click here for the KaijuZoo Bandai Creation SpaceGodzilla

Image
It was a lot of fun working with the bright metallic colors on this amazing Trendmasters design and even more fun to see my idea for the "surgery" have such a nice result (see the webpage for details on the back fin modification).

Client feedback: "I thought the Trendmasters paint scheme was the best, but this surpasses it altogether!"

This KaijuZoo exclusive is now "coming off the production line": one is sold, one pending and this one is making its public debut at G-FEST XIV this weekend in Chicago. If you are at the convention, stop by my booth in Artist's Alley and check it out!!

This is a very limited KaijuZoo exclusive series of only 5 in the world. The figure has all joints glued and detailed as well as repositioning of the tail and resculpting of the back fins for a more dynamic pose. The base is constructed by me and made from exquisite solid cherry wood and it is complemented with the hand-made GOJIRA plaque. Overall, it is a nice blend of retro-ruggedness and elegance befitting the golden 50th anniversary of the King of the Monsters.

This 11" Banpresto Godzilla '54 (Shodai-Goji) was sculpted by the famous Yuji Sakai and was released in 2002. Additionally, this past January, the Banpresto was voted First Place on the Monter Zero forum poll for selecting the best representation of the essence of the G'54 Shodai sculpt.

Even though it is a great figure, the molding process left a few details out which I think were worthy of being corrected in my version:
1. the tail was modified to give it a natural curve and lift to create a more dynamic pose on the wood base, much better than just being a "tail dragger".

2. I also removed with "surgery" all of the excessive vinyl at the bottom of the outer fins. The figure now looks like it did in the movie, very much improved. I will have to take a "before and after" shot to show you how much a difference my "attention to detail" made.

Pre-order reservations are now being accepted (1 sold; one sale pending)- Price = $265.00 (includes $50 for the figure and base wood/supplies and more than 15 hours labor). Please let me know ASAP if you would like to reserve one of the three available.

Just got back from G-Fest in Chicago and it was a blast as usual (my 5th time) and this was my first official year as a dealer ... and I actually got laryngitis from talking to about 50 potential and current clients!
Image

And here is a cool close-up pic from the just completed KaijuZoo Exclusive Marmit Gezora webpage.
Image

This is the ninth KaijuZoo exclusive series, this time consisting of only five built and joint-detailed Marmit Gezora's painted in a stylized realistic manner. They are painted with metallic colors and oversprayed with color-shift paints to give the figures the glossy and iridescent look of a marine aquatic animal. Please notice in the photos how the blue, gold and pinkish radiant hues seem to move around, the effect is even more amazing when viewed in person under natural light!!

Two of them are already sold, one more is pending so let me know if anyone would like to place a reservation. Thanks!!

Thx SD, much appreciated! Sorry for the delay but I've been travelling the last few weeks and am now getting caught up with a few more current projects.

So here is a sneak peek at a commission I am finishing up: the evil and sinister monochrome GMK Godzilla using the huge WestKenji vinyl kit.

Hi, I very much appreciate both of your compliments and especially that last comment. With the completion of each KaijuZoo paint project, I do spend a lot of time building its web page, capturing and preserving the essence of each figure, not only to share my artwork but to also educate about my techniques and capabilities. Thanks again!!

And to further expound on that theme, here is perhaps my most interesting and unique project to date - the restoration of a very rare 35 year old original Bullmark Hawaii Megalon.
Image

Keep in mind that kaiju toys (such as those made by Marusan and Bullmark in the 60's and 70's) were just that - TOYS - items for kids to play with out in the backyard or take into the bathtub. This pic is fun because when I disassembled the Megalon for cleaning prior to painting, you could actually see the dirty residue of dried water and mud that had accumulated within the figure more than three decades earlier.

Image
Another interesting detail about this photo is the comparison of the oxidized and bleached outer vinyl with the almost perfect interior vinyl which shows the very original color. Also of note is the relative fragility of the original Bullmark red/brown paint compared to the gold and green - I have seen the same thing on other early examples of this figure.

So please check out the complete page for more details and many other pics!

Great work KZ!

I can always appreciate a person who knows how to push the paint just right and shows true appreciation for all lines no matter WHAT years they came out!

Restoration is HARD work! These toys are getting love from the right person!

But we love the writing on the foot, don't we?

I restored a giant Bullmark Baragon, it was full of mud and grass!

Did you at least put the dirt and grass back in after restoring? ;)
