Everyone should definitely try to see this one while it's in town:

ART IN THE STREETS
@ The Geffen Contemporary
April 17, 2011 - August 8, 2011

"Art in the Streets is the first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art. Curated by MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch and Associate Curators Roger Gastman and Aaron Rose, the exhibition will trace the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, and Sao Paulo, where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved. The exhibition will feature paintings, mixed media sculptures, and interactive installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists and will emphasize Los Angeles's role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to seminal local movements such as cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. A comprehensive timeline illustrated with artwork, photos, video, and ephemera will provide a historical context for the work."

I'm looking forward to seeing this when we're in town in June and July.

Also, for those who can't make it to this viewing, it will be moving to Brooklyn next year in March.

will definitely be making it down for this one.. looks extraordinary. might this be the kind of event where various involved artists create promotional sites across the town?

From what I read in the MOCA newsletter there will be some tie-in events. I'm sure there will be a calendar available at the show and online.

The photos of the entire Os Gemeos room are completely insane...those two pictures don't even cover 1/4 of what that room has in it...nice coverage. It makes me want to fly out to LA a month early

This is undoubtedly one of the most important art shows of it's kind ever mounted. The images coming out of the show so far are mind blowing.
They have recreated the late, great Rammellzee's entire studio/loft for the event.
I am counting the hours until the MOCA members opening party Saturday night.

Yeah it really is incredible Connell. They also had Barry McGee et al re-create their Deitch project installation...I'm slightly bummed I have to wait until June to see it

There is a nice blurb/write up on Huffington Post this morning. I was a little annoyed to see Miss Van's piece with an incorrect credit though..hopefully they'll fix that later on.

This looks fantastic. Especially the works and studio of Rammellzee.

Rammellzee has been such a great influence on my graffiti letting style. Ever since reading interviews with him in 80's issues of 'Art In America' where he talked about his theories on arming letters. I.e Graffiti pieces going to war and battling other words and names. His concept was that by adding arrows and things called star launchers to pieces they would be armed (a lot like tanks) and ready for battle. Letters would take on attacking or defensive stances. Words battling and destroying words with style. These ideas also fused with p-funk and sun-ra type visions made for some incredibly imaginative and original artwork & music.

I have gone to view this twice already and still haven't taken it all in. Believe me , this is not just a show for only those that love Graffiti, it is so much more. An amazing documentation of the invention of of a whole new art form, of music, dance, and lifestyle. It is a celebration of a movement that, whether we know it are not, has effected us all in some way.

I have talked to my wife on planning a trip to LA just for the show. She's celebrating her 40th this June, I guess events like these shouldn't be missed and might not happen again.

I visited last weekend and was blown away.

The whole thing is very reminiscent of the Deitch Projects installation from 1999 - and no surprise considering he is the new director of MOCA.

Our very own Coop even gets a look in!

I went to this on Monday and it really is so much to take in! I think my favorite areas were the Os Gemeos room and the Keith Haring stuff. The neckface stuff was really well done for a museum installation...very realistic.

If you have the chance to go, don't pass this up. It will blow your mind!

Also, until the end of the exhibit, Banksy has given everyone the opportunity to go on Mondays for free.

as a side bit, next door at the Japanese museum there is a Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo) exhhbit opening on July 9...hit up both and show your support for the arts!

(sorry I didn't call the LASK crew this time, this weekend was strictly a family thing)
