Post what to do in LA
missy and I are officially in town from Feb 21-26. mark your calendars.

our dance card is actually pretty full already with the event at Disneyland as well as other assorted theme park/tourist trap explorations, but I'm always open to suggestions of anything else that is allegedly a "no miss."

points of interest include:

tourist traps that I don't already know about
places to eat good hot dogs
hidden gem toy spots/flea markets/junk shops/etc. that carry old stuff
peoples houses that have crazy collections of non-western vinyl toys (even better if you have old stuff)

If you'll be in LA and want a good* hot dog, try out Pink's.

*Never been there but definitely a tourist spot I always hear about.

When I was in LA years and years ago we went to this restaurant called the Magic Castle (or something like that). The restaurant was rigged so that weird things would happen while you were there and they had a bunch of magic shows in these rooms that were all hidden. It was definitly fun but like I said it was a long ass time ago and I have no idea if it still even there.

are you talking about the private club for magician's? you must have been invited by someone then, because it's not open to the public.

I keep thinking about seeing how much a membership is. you actually don't have to be a magician to be a member I don't' think.

definitely check out span of sunset if you have never been. The stuff not for sale outweighs the stuff for sale. It's cool to look at though.

If you like Cuban food, you need to check out Versailles on Venice.

That's like the only place I need/want to go when I'm in LA.

Lunch at Muso and Frank's in Hollywood. Reasonably priced, good food. This lunchtime Johnny Depp was sat in a booth - with no one hassling him.

Honestly I am not sure. It was probably 9 years ago or so and I went with a friends family so it may very well have been that they were members. Sorry I am not much help but if you could figure out how to get in it was pretty awesome.

well from your description it certainly sounds like the Magic Castle. and I don't really know of anything else out there that is similar.

I really ought to look into becoming a member.

Well damn, I do feel lucky. It was a really cool place. The whole place was rigged with illusions. For example there was a stool at the bar that the bartender could slowly lower until you would be sitting like at everyone elses shoulder but it did it so slowly that you couldn't even notice until you were staring at everyones chest. Then when you noticed the bartender could shoot the stool back up to original height. That was just one of several things I can remember. Very cool place.

versailles sucks. Too salty and they don't even have midnight sandwiches. There's a real deal holyfield cuban place, believe it or not in silverlake ( I know, I know) that is good. It's on sunset in a strip mall that has a baskin robbins in it. I forget the cross street.

But when in LA, eat the mexican...go to miami or cuba to eat cuban.

Go to the MOCA and I think that awesome Dali exhibit is still running at LACMA.

** I think that cuban joint that I'm talking about is on Hyperion and Sunset**

and it's called la cochinita

Dali at LACMA was great (closed a few weeks back). Murakami at MOCA is awesome, but done by 2/11, anyone in L.A. should check it out, especially on thursday nights when it's free.

I went to the Getty Villa in malibu over the weekend and had a blast. The architecture is amazing. Wandered around for 4-5 hours and hardly even looked at the collections (mostly greek antiquities). It's free, except for the $8 parking fee, reservations required. The cafe has great food at decent prices. A hidden L.A. gem.

I've still never been to the Getty. I'm sure I'd enjoy it, but I'm always looking for more low class/dive type activities.

I like it raw.
