I'm not trying to stir the pot here but am genuinely interested in hearing your comments on this. As a designer and somebody that works with artists, photographers, illustrators etc. this is, and will continue to be controversial. And what about the creator himself? What's his take on this? He took my illustration, and made a woodcut of it - He described the process himself - is that so hard to comprehend? If he had asked me first, it probably wouldn't have been an issue. Before the NagNagNag project started, I contacted Shigeru, and said I was interested in a collaboration, and everything that I've done since then has been with his approval. The artwork is mine, the toy design is his. Pretty simple really. I make my living creating art - selling originals and prints, and licensing images to reproduce in other media. Can't you understand why I might be pissed to see someone do this without my consent? I'm a little frightened that you are a designer and don't have a better understanding of business ethics as it relates to creative work.

How do we know this isn't just a faux copying to hype the release?

good or bad art, you should always ask permission if you're going to use someone else's art in your project whether you are just practicing or not. Common sense, good ettiquette, respect towards other people's property, call it what you want...but always ask. The woodcut should be destroyed.

I can totally understand your position COOP and even more so now that zapatoloco has confirmed that he used your image as a means of creating his own. Initially I thought that he had simply used the figure and your work as inspiration for his woodcut and not actually traced it to create his own. Any chance you'd enlighten us as to what you actually do in terms of copyrighting your work? Surely this isn't the first time you've run into this?

Years ago someone posted a great photo of an Obake and I wanted to try to paint a copy of the photo - I never did, but I asked whoever posted the photo if they'd be cool with me attempting to do so. And neither of us (to my knowledge) are/were professional artists.

(No surprise there.) I wouldn't expect Zapataloco to destroy the woodcut, but it would be nice if he would at least acknowledge that I have a legitimate complaint, instead of being a smartass about it. plover wrote: Any chance you'd enlighten us as to what you actually do in terms of copyrighting your work? Re: Got paranoia?
The thing is, it's not even about art. It is really just common sense. You wouldn't go to your neighbor and take, much less, borrow something of theirs without asking. Maybe that's just how I was raised. You ask to borrow something and then put it back where you got it.
Anyway...I'm not sure if I got my question answered but, is there a way to get a print of the Nag drawing that Coop made. I honestly don't care for the toy but the drawing is cool.

Re: Got paranoia?
Before i go off on another smart-assed tangent i will try to adress "the case of the drawing of the toy with the extruded anus" in a serious manner. First of all i think i did at least vaguely acknowledge that it was rude to just come out and surprise post this on the forum. If that was not clear than let it be clear now, i think it might have been a little rude but i sort of meant it that way given the whole aura around the Caveman toy. But i am in no way a "professional" involved in "business" who "lets his lawyer " handle copyright stuff. I sell plants and produce, not artwork. This is a hand reproduced drawing for private non-commercial use, no misrepresentation or improper financial gain involved = no case and very little of an issue. i am the kid scratching eddy into his desk or the weirdo rocking some cro-mags on the farfisfa and nose-flute on you tube...so throw the book at me you big diva...i'll sell some bootleg B.G. prints to pay for my lawyers . But back to seriously, i would really like to know if posting on a forum like this is considered to be the same as publishing something in the real physical world, if it were so i guess there would be some legal argument...but i think its all about morals at this point. P.S. i will destroy the blocks in exchange for a clear red unpainted B.G.

Re: Got paranoia?
Coop, I don't like to say it, but maybe the solution is to not post such high resolution images. I hate to suggest that as I love to look at your work in detail. Maybe you need a big ugly COPYRIGHT COOP watermark across your art.

I hate doing that shit, but when people rip you off, then dance around showing their ass at you afterwards, maybe that's the only option. Funny, I wouldn't have expected such bullshit in a small, self-policed community like this.

I hate this thread, it has so much lame drama (and an even lamer toy) it's like an episode of Real Housewives of Skullbrain. It had to come up after they combined the boards.

Question for those who hate the toy/drama/thread: Why do you keep coming back? The drama makes me laugh the toy makes me joy-vomit so I love this thread!

Re: Got paranoia?
can you explain what is so morally reprehensible in reproducing a drawing with no intention of profiting or claiming it as ones own ?
Should one really always seek permission from the original author of a work we seek to reproduce as an exercise ? Should we be forbiden to show the results of such an exercise ? I honestly don't see why we should.
I wouldn't expect someone to ask permission to reproduce my drawings unless they were making more than a few copies and somehow making money off my work or misrepresenting me and my work. in any other case i would find it a little obsequious and courtly to ask permission to copy one of my drawings at home.
punkrockeriness is at play here wether you like it or not.

Should one really always seek permission from the original author of a work we seek to reproduce as an exercise ? Should we be forbiden to show the results of such an exercise ? When you show it to the person you copied it from, with no comment or explanation, on a public forum? Do you have a legal obligation to always seek permission? No, but when you are registered on the same message board as the artist, and can easily send a PM with a few clicks, it is lame not to do so. Ironically, if you had been polite and asked first, I would have had no problem. Everybody on here is always so het up about Toy Karma and doing the right thing by other collectors, I don't see why this is any different, or so hard to grasp. It's just common courtesy - all too uncommon these days, I guess.
