Post Re: Angora Patio
I think more people need to watch 16 & Pregnant or Teen Mom.
It still stuns me that kids are STILL HAVING KIDS after seeing all the crap that happens from those shows!
Yes I watch these shows, along with Real World and Jersey Shore. Guilty pleasure.

But before I go into a rant, let's get back on the rails.

So.... about them Nags...

I don't think Shig "tries" to do anything crazy, it doesn't come off that way to me at all. It comes off as totally sincere. What the Mishka dudes do is different, they're not the creators, they're just making art for it. They try. But I like it all so I'm seeing it from a different POV. I don't think the Nag design or Shig are "Trying" anything. Maybe collaborators, but look at the situation, every time they "try" people eat it up (both negative and positive) and talk about it more than anything else. It's the people fueling it, not the creators.

see, I look at it like they arent pullin some "try-hard" moves. I think they're sitting around like "this would be fuckin hilarious/gross/awesome if we had BG doing this" he's disgusting, doing disgusting things, what else would he do look at him. I love the fact that the headers arent just the same thing everytime. They tell the ridiculous story of a sick weirdo creature.

+1, dont think anything wrong with the sculpt, paint or the lottery sale....
Everything shigeru does is cool for me.
Ok with the art done by COOP or Lamour, dont take much care what is about. All I think it's a toy header that sometime doesn't represent the toys....

i know he's the violent caveman, but when I look at the Nag sculpt, I actually think he's more cute not really menacing or grotesque

I think it's because even though COOP and Lamour paint them doing horrific things, they seem to have a joyful, innocent face. It's that smile and those eyes!!!!
Can we get a stuffed plush NAG??!?!

Indeed, I think it's the back story being crafted around a kaiju that's coming out of the yokai and manga traditions, coupled possibly with Shigeru's sick sense of humor (if I recall the story properly from like 50 pages ago..) and that's that. It puts the ultimate monster in front of us, as in "ecce homo", but in vinyl.
The artists contributing their rendition of a given scene in that story line must probably have long conversations with Shigeru before the concepts have gone through the various stages and ended up where they did. That's what artistic collaborations are about. But I'm not an artist, so I can only guess here..

I like the figure not because it's rare, nor because it's so ugly that it gives me the shivers, but because in my mind it's quite in line with a Drunk Boy, Two-Headed Bemon, a Kappa or an Hone Borg, even a Chicken Fever. In my eyes it's art, it is beautiful and I'm beholding it..

I won't speak for Joel or Greg, but I have always been given free rein by Shigeru on all our stuff - he has only ever made one minor request/edit on any of our collaborations. The cutaway art was done because I love those old kaiju cutaways, the Hedorah version came after shig made a custom Hedorah as a gift, the Rat Fink version was Shig's request, the four-eyes sculpt was a back-and-forth collaboration, and the Garamon tribute art was done after re-watching that episode of Ultraman.

The Boryoku Genjin packaging is a tabula rasa for Joel, Greg and I to indulge our love of comics, bad horror movies, Fangoria, heavy metal album covers, and MAD magazine.

This is pretty accurate. My audience is basically Shigeru, Joel and Greg. If they go nuts when they see it, I've succeeded.

Coop - thanks for the WIP pics! It's cool to see this through the various stages. I assume you use a projector to beam the original drawing on the canvas?

Sorry mistyped when I said "toy" that tries. I don't think Shig or the toy try to do anything but it's some of the header art, the pictures of the toy with jewish flag and nazi flag and that sort of stuff that 'tries' to get a reaction from people. The toy is fine and doesn't need any hype. It's well worth it without it.

Oh yeah, all that stuff does. But I don't feel it's fake or annoying, a lot of "art" tries to get a reaction or rise out of people in that way. It's just goofiness to me, but I know I'm a little more jaded and calloused to a lot of things like that than some people so I can see how others would view it.

The current hype aside..which I think lamour,Greg and coop do a great job with all the header cards they have released nag and non nag. I would love for shig to maybe do an interview or talk about why and how he got the inspiration for the nag.. I know people thought it wouldn't sell and look at it now. Not sure if it's for hype not releasing information about the figure or that shig is quite a shy person and dosent want to be put in the spotlight for private reasons either way a nag and an old gojira is all I have left of my kaiju collection and I wouldn't change that for anything.

Thanks Coop! Really means a lot since I've looked up to your art for the longest time. The stuff you create with the Nag is just too good which is usually a by product of natural inspiration. Same with me and Greg.
The people that know and have hung out with us know that we don't try. The people that don't know us are speculators trying to figure out where all this comes from. Don't! Just have a chuckle. That's what we do. 2 Goofballs having fun.
Also, the BG in that picture is like Max von Sydow in the Excorcist. He's a good guy. He's not forcing the girl to do anything but saving her. It's all relative as someone once said. I'm not lessening anyone's viewpoint on my art as they shouldn't lessen my art because of their viewpoint.
