Post Kanegons - Vintage or Reproductions
Sorry to be so boring, and still on the subject of Kanegons...

Mikeee has got me hooked on Celga now (there goes my money!), and I saw a Kanegon that is made by
"BURUMAAKUROGO". Is this a reproduction? It's a large blue guy and 34 cm! Looks brand new, but I saw a copyright 1966 stamp on the bottom of the foot, although it could be copyrighting the design, not the manufacture date?

Also am I correct to assume that all Kanegons manufactured by Marusan, Bullmark, Toygraph, and US Toys are not repros? (so confused  )

Thanks again for your help!

How do you do, Mr. Humphreys.
The subject of Kanegon is never boring. Its one the iconic figures from Ultra Q days.
Can't really tell unless we see the pics. But I believe the 1966 is copyright of the figure and not the mold production year?

During the 60s? and 70s Kanegon was produced by Bullmark and Marusan. Besides the ones you mentioned, a prominent modern day manufacturer is M1go- superb quality. These 3 manufacturer uses the re-tool molds based on the original (maybe even the original-correct me if I'm wrong guys.)
The ones used by Toygraph and US Toys, Bear Model are original designs.
A good source for info would be
http://www.clubtokyo.org/

Sorry for my ramblings.
Oh, btw you can't have enough Kanegons or the other guy called Garamon/ Pigamon. :D

Marusan was the first to make Kanegon is the '60s, they went out of business and then Bullmark made them using the same molds as Marusan. Currently Bandai/Popy are making re-issues of the original Marusan/Bullmark toys that were made in the '60s and '70s. The one you are talking about is probably the Bandai/Popy that is modeled on the original standard, they just copied it and made it into a giant size Kanegon. Also, all the Toygraph and US Toys Kanegons are original to those companies, they are not reissues, as are the Marmit figures and whoever else I am forgetting and the moment. There is also the KING SCALE DX MONSTER SIZE Kanegon from M1 that is based on the Marusan/Bullmark too, its about $1000 if you want one.

OOOPS!!! I was to slow. M1 hasnt made any standard Kanegons though.

Thank you for the explanation kurumonz :P

Here is the photo of the Kanegon I mentioned, I am assuming it's a repro because it looks so new

It is neat looking.
Whoops! Just saw your comments Baikin, thank you for the elaboration, it's good to know. I'm trying to learn more about Kanegons so I can be an informed buyer and just because I appreciate the facts, so thank you :) By the way, $1000 is a bit steep for me, but I've seen JP vinyl go into the tens of thousands--hard core!

For reference, the black printed stamp on the foot ("Bandai") is generally a dead giveaway for repros.

Then it's going for way UNDER $1000 right now! Hmmm... is this a bargain at $250? Looks awfully new for an original?

Mikeee, what have you gotten me into?

P.S. Akum6n, thanks for the Bandai factoid. Erm... I'm a little confused though--does that black mark on the foot in the above photo represent the Bandai mark, or is it just a marking someone scribbled on there? I thought that "stampeding buffalo/bull" mark stood for Bullmark?

The black mark is the Bandai mark (バンダイ). Yeah, the bull-mark imprint above the black mark is for Bullmark.

I think the $1000 toy is the monster M1Go version. Don't know how much the Bandai giant repros go for.

I'm glad it worked out

That's a glossy lookin Kanegon repro. At 34cm tall, it's about the same height as U.S.Toys giant versions. I'm obsessed with the U.S.Toys version which has smoother lines and a pudgier sculpt. This classic version is much more detailed and a closer representation of Kanegon. Can't go wrong with either.

The one you have pictured(Bclub) should at most be 125-135 if i remember the retail price correctly, but i would think you maybe able to find it cheaper.

annunciate that, and keep Engrish in your head. It reads Bullmark (you'll get used to it)

For what it's worth, the header cards (and sometimes the toys foot as well) will generally have 2 dates on them, the original copyright date to the character, and again for the current press of the figure. Example is that all my Hedorah's from Charactics have in plain print: 1971, 2004/2005/2006 etc.

Engrish eh? Ok, now I know, and thanks for the additional info. This is getting bad... the more I know about Kanegon, the more I want to buy. And now I think I also want a Metron

I think I'll put off the giant size for now, Hubby will kill me--our place is flooded with my toys (but Hunneee, I'm just starting to collect JP toys!). Just put the Kanegon red/blue metallic on hold at S7--what really attracted me to it was the packaging I saw on Yahoo JP...

Snazzy UFO spaceship, and love that tube packaging!
We're also suppose to go to Kimono My House tomorrow--money is getting scarce!

About a year ago - right around the time the giant US Toys version came out. I think B-club has only released a blue one so far but since they tend to release multiple colorways, maybe there will be more in the future.
